Re: Bismarck and her contemporaries
JtD, According to steering tests in 1931, at 190 rpms Hood would heel 9* with the helm put over to 35* port for 14 seconds. The rpms correspond to a speed of 29 knots. As 14 seconds was insufficient to cause much angular movement, the heel was due to rudder action alone. Holding the helm over for l...

Re: Bismarck and her contemporaries
Ok why do you call it semi-professional? Because I don't think it fully professional as in someone gets paid for the job and it is better than fully amateur. What's wrong with the ship selection. They seam to have chosen all the WWII battleship class that became operational in WWII with the excepti...

Re: Bismarck and her contemporaries
I'm not talking penetration tables, I meant the armour layout of Hood vs. 38cm at Denmark Strait, 5 mins after opening fire. Conditions of the ship, firing range, etc. Somewhat different to that what Bill Jurens did, partially because we now know more about the condition Hood was in when hit than he...

Re: World's worst admiral
The movement of the S&G away from Brest was not a withdrawal, but a redeployment to a different front. They were both intended to go up North to stop Arctic convoys, which at that time provided the Soviet Union with crucial equipment. In the North, they were thought to achieve more while being a...

Re: Bismarck and her contemporaries
I actually intended to, but I don't have the time. If I did it now, I end up with something even worse than the comparison there. And I hate critics that can't come up with something good.

Re: Bismarck and her contemporaries
If you want to try and make that case I suggest you look at: http://www.combinedfleet.com/baddest.htm You may disagree with the factors being considered, their values, and/or their weights but it's a good logical process and provides a good framework. It's also pretty clear how they came up with th...

Re: why couldnt she steer
But in trials in the Baltic it was found to be at least difficult to steer with the engines alone. It certainly worked better than with a rudder angled hard port, but it was far from perfect.

Re: The Greatest Naval Battle in History
I consider the Guadalcanal night clashes great naval battles, in particular the cruiser action sometime early on. There have also been several major naval clashes in the Mediterranean Sea from around 700 a.d. on that frequently decided the future of Europe. Lepanto is just the last of these. IIrc, t...

Re: What if Hood hadn't blown up?
But Bismarck didn't press the attack against PoW after Hood was sunk. So it doesn't take more than the raw and undergunned PoW to make Bismarck turn away.
