Re: Hit on POW compass platform
Hello everybody, with this map piece and some latest determined references, I like to re-open the discussion we had on Hood forum years ago about the course alteration by PoW to avoid Hood remains, up until her turn away at 06.01 and 30 seconds. Bye Antonio :D Course.jpg This reopens an even bigger...

Re: Hit on POW compass platform
...the damage inside the compass platform was done by a 38cm shell's windscreen, which was knocked off during the initial impact. The windscreen weighed 83kg, and it's metal fragments killed or injured most of the people inside. This is what I read in most books and articles... Fragments from the c...

Re: Denmark Strait and RN Articles of War
If Leach had intended to break off the fight while Hood was still visible above the surface, why not simply CONTINUE with his starboard avoidance maneuver, cross his own wake further behind the scene of disaster, while making smoke? All he had to do then, was maintain an opposing course for long eno...

Re: Denmark Strait and RN Articles of War
Gentlemen, I have two intentions for making this posting. The first is to ask a rather an embarrassing question. But let me state first, that I don't care about any TIMING associated with it, as the time it occurred has no effect on the answer. When Leach made his order to RETREAT from the action (n...

Re: Denmark Strait and RN Articles of War
My thanks to everyone who helped clarify matters in the past several posts; many excellent points were made. The source of my "Dazed and confused" entry, was based on the offering that Holland and Kerr might still be alive and (briefly) still above water, when Leach made up his mind to wit...

Re: Denmark Strait and RN Articles of War
That's why he (and Adm.Wake-Walker as well in my opinion, who had been ordered by Holland to engage) should have been inquired and should have defended their decisions against the Naval Disciple Act (1866) still valid in 1941 (until 1957!) The outstanding "rub" with this statement is that...

Re: Denmark Strait and RN Articles of War
:?: :stubborn:  :?:  I don't believe this is possible. The smoke to the right in the NH photo seems considerably to the south and east of the remnants of Hood ; the suggestion that the turn away was ordered at 0601 hardly gives Leach enough time to get off the compass platform, let alo...

I do not think you're saying that Leach's decision to break off the action and Wake-Walker's decision not to re-engage later were incorrect or unwise Wow....! Removing the triple-flipple..."I think you're saying that Leach's decision to break off the action and Wake-Walker's decision not to re...

Re: Denmark Strait and RN Articles of War
Captain Leach had already displayed his initiative in disregarding Hollands' orders which would have led to POW firing on Prinz Eugen and not obtaining those three hits on Bismarck... Very astute and potent reasoning, RF. Had matters gone differently and Leach been brought before the "skewer&q...

Re: jammed rudders and damage to prop shafts
I might add that Bismarck experienced steering failure prior to the "fatal" one caused by the aerial torpedo strike on the 26th May. After the HMS Norfolk incident, when Prinz Eugen was ordered to take station ahead of Bismarck , the battleship's helm suddenly engaged while the cruiser was...

Re: Denmark Strait and RN Articles of War
Once again, I concur with nearly all of Antonio's points. There is one thing not mentioned in the years since this event, and that may be a "whole 'nother can of worms" I really don't want to open---still, I feel it is noteworthy to state here. An example of fixed, unbendable doctrine, rou...

Re: Antonio:? about Denmark St.
Without wishing to divert this thread in any way, I think the GHG aboard Prinz Eugen was a remarkable device and probably benefited from ideal or near-ideal thermal-layer conditions, that morning. No doubt, its operator(s) were trained well and knew their job to a peak of competence.
