Re: Differences between 10,5-cm (4.1") Krupp Naval guns S.K. L/40 and L/45?
So far I can discern three variants: -L/40 with ring, hopped gun (the oldest model) -L/40 without ring, monoblock (tentative, after seeing all the photos I do not recall with certainty if I there is one) -L/45 without ring, monoblock (the more modern) Do you concur with this? Of the second variant d...

Re: Differences between 10,5-cm (4.1") Krupp Naval guns S.K. L/40 and L/45?
My focus is more on being able to distinguish external characteristics. The back-ground is still there; - if I stand before being able to differentiate, this is now a Krupp gun barrel L/40 or L/45 on a Navy Mount M.P.L. C/1904 - C/1906 . (But I'm still looking forward to learning something other ne...

Re: Differences between 10,5-cm (4.1") Krupp Naval guns S.K. L/40 and L/45?
Hi! Looking at an enlarged image of Emdem´s gun another possibility comes to my mind, that the reinforcing ring is no actually so, but a part of the gun cradle. The cradle seems to be a circular sleeve that contains the trunnions and the tube, which recoils within the sleeve. Good morning Marcelo A...

Re: Differences between 10,5-cm (4.1") Krupp Naval guns S.K. L/40 and L/45?
If we look at the pictures of the two L/40-Versions of C/1897 and C/1904, both use the same ammunition. But the 1904 Version with this massive 'reinforcement ring'; - Why? Here I have no functional or logical explanation for this. Regards Holger Hi Holger. The denominations C/1897 and C/1904 relate...

Re: Differences between 10,5-cm (4.1") Krupp Naval guns S.K. L/40 and L/45?
I would like to go back to my original question here. I'll try to ask this question as precisely as possible. It's about the different versions of the 10.5 cm Krupp Guns: 10,5-cm S.K. L/40 on M.P.L C/1904 and 10,5-cm S.K. L/45 on M.P.L. C/1906 In particular the massiv `Reinforcement Ring´ around th...

Re: Group North and Group West
Hello, I share your interest in the operational areas during Bismarck's dash for Brest. While I don't have a specific map to reference, you might find detailed naval history archives or books that delve into the specifics of Group West's operational boundaries during that period. The timing of Lutj...

1. The breechblocks of our modern cannons and quick-loading cannons. The breechblocks of our ship's guns, which have been introduced since 1880, belong to the class of horizontal wedge breechches, except for the falling breech block of the 5.2 cm 8. K. L/35. Since 1889 they have been introduced as ...

Re: Torpedoes explosions at the end of run
Wether you want the torpedo to self-detonate or not at the end of it's run is determined by several factors, including tactical. Kriegsmarine incorporated mechanisms to both ensure selfdestruction as well as the opposite in WW2: Endstreckendetonierersicherung (EDS) This was a hydrostatic mechanism ...

Re: Japanese homing torpedoes
That book has translations problems in some parts. One is when it describes the best track that a destroyer has to sail to launch torpedoes. It says that the track must be a parabola (what would need the destroyer changing continually its heading), whereas I presume the author means that the distanc...

Re: Secundary guns turrets
you have to shift the lower picture by about 1-2 m. look at the transverse bulkheads. HI! I noticed this, but it won´t work either. In the armoured deck the barbettes are located in compartment VII, its openings roughly between stations 75 and 77. In the deck below the 15cm magazines and handling r...

Re: Group North and Group West
Hello all, Is anyone aware of a map that shows each of the above group's operational areas? My reason for asking is that Bismarck came under the control of Group West during the dash for Brest and I was wondering where and when that took place, and the "dividing line" or quadrant the ship...

Re: Secundary guns turrets
Strangely enough, there seems to be an error in Draminski´s AOTS Scharnhorst. The fore 15cm barbettes are above compartments 17 and 18 (15cm magazine and handling room), but in the aft ones these compartments are farther to the stern. Is this a mistake or the arrangement was different? https://i.pos...

Re: Secundary guns turrets
I was under the impression that there were "flash blockers" in the line of ammo from storage to gun deck. They opened upward and the shell passed through, then they closed. I've seen this in operation at least once, but lordy, that was 30+ years ago. Ready to say "Oops". Yes, an...
