Re: Sunday, May 24th anniversay
Can you provide a source for 128.000 - 134.000 shp ? I can't find it in G&D. I have several mentions for 110.000 - 111.000 maximum, for all 5 ships in the class. Recorded speeds go up to 28.5kts, while design speed goes ~ 29.25kts. All of them are ~ 38.000 - 39.000 load, so again, I don't find ...

Re: Sunday, May 24th anniversay
I have given you an excerpt from PoW's log showing her running at 29.1 knots and 239 RPM prior to intercepting Bismarck. G&D state that she produced 128-134K SHP during that time, which is certainly consistent with that RPM so I'm not sure why you don't accept G&D's figures showing 128-134K...

Re: Sunday, May 24th anniversay
G&D, Allied Battleships in World War Two , p191. This is the volume you are referring to, and it also lists the trials outputs as ranging from 111300 to 111300SHP on pages 253-254, but as I've stated repeatedly the RN was very conservative in their trial full power runs and ran the trials at at...

Re: Sunday, May 24th anniversay
The KM kept very close tabs on RN ships and would have known all about the Strasbourg outrunning Hood, simply from accounts in the foriegn press and from Vichy, which made no secret of it. So no source; I thought so... Did the Strasbourg outrun the Hood? Yes or No? If no, I guess the history books ...

Re: Sunday, May 24th anniversay
Which G&D is that? In "British, French, Russian Battleships", which covers the KGV class, they have specifics for each ship of the class. The maximum (forced) figures are ~ 111.000 shp for Howe and Anson, and ~ 110.000 shp for the others. G&D, Allied Battleships in World War Two ,...

Re: Sunday, May 24th anniversay
[ I asked you about some sources. Regardless, Lutjens knew he was shadowed by 2 cruisers. I don't understand how you expect him to "lose his pursuers with 30kts", since a 32-34kts speed was normal for cruisers of the time. So if I say the KM knew when the moon rises, you'll ask me for an ...

Re: Sunday, May 24th anniversay
And speaking of maximum speeds. I remember you posted PoW's maximum forced output as 134000-135000shp. I have been looking in several books last night, and I found: - KGV class maximum shp (unforced) - 100.000shp - KGV class maximum shp (maximum forced) - 111.000 shp. (Garzke, Dulin, "Allied B...

Re: Sunday, May 24th anniversay
The KM knew that Hood was well overdue for a major refit and that she was 4000 tons overweight and would certainly have known that speeds over 30 knots were most unlikely. During war exercises aboard the Bismarck, Hood was always present with a 32kts speed. Why do you say "certainly have known...

Re: Sunday, May 24th anniversay
... run at 30+ knots and he could have sidestepped Holland and broke into the open Atlantic. I don't think he considered this to be an option because Bismarck's maximum speed was about 28.5 knots, and maybe 29 knots at "full throttle" which ran the risk of a major machinery failure. NO. T...

Re: Sunday, May 24th anniversay
However, the flooding into generator room, and the boiler rooms would have created a lot of trim down on the bow. If solidly flooded: E-Maschinen-Raum 4: 13 cm Kesselraum Bb 2: 36 cm By the way Luetjens stated 1 degree trim down on bow. So that's .49m without the flooding in the bow? a 1 deg trim d...

Re: Sunday, May 24th anniversay
Maybe I'm misunderstanding something, but how could Bismarck reverse course and still get to the North Atlantic? Also, how could he hope to outrun Norfolk and Suffolk? As you can see: http://www.bismarck-class.dk/bismarck/history/pictures/bisfirstcontact/bisfirstcontact1.gif all that Lutjens had to...

Re: Sunday, May 24th anniversay
Since topic has changed much from the initial posting, I wonder where that 2,000-tons-of-water-mystery comes from. Of course I heard about it, and about one of the props churning at or close to the water surface - which would be no wonder in the long Atlantic swell and with the bow slightly down. B...

Re: Sunday, May 24th anniversay
Assumed all tanks outside the torpedo bulkhead and all tanks near the torpedo bulkhead in the double bottom in compartments XIII/XIV were damaged and E-Maschinen-Raum 4 is solidly flooded, it's not enough to cause such a heavy list. Only a solid flooding of compartment XX/XXI up to the battery deck...

Re: Sunday, May 24th anniversay
Result: Bismarck took a 9-degree port list and a trim down by the bow of 2 meters. That's very unlikely. Quoting the Baron (pages 116-117): "The first hit ...before long we had nearly 2000 tons of sea water in our forecastle. The 2nd hit...caused flooding of the forward port generator room and...

Re: Sunday, May 24th anniversay
I believe initially that one of the props was actually out of the water. Sequence of events: First hit (G&D state 2nd hit): The turbo-generator room quickly filled with water . The boiler room flooded at a much slower rate through tears in welded seams in the main subdivision bulkhead. 2nd hit ...
