Re: BS speed - last battle

At the risk of making myself (a science teacher) look stupid, there is something that has been gnawing away at me for a few days. It is this: Water is more dense than oil, that's why oil floats on water! So, if the oil in the tanks is burned off and replaced by water the ship's displacement will inc...

Re: BS speed - last battle

As you say Vic, the photograph does show the exit (or blast) hole in the false bow wave. So, little or no flooding at lower speeds. But the transfer pumps were still in accessible, according to Bill Jurens, as of May this year. I can't claim to know how much oil this would render unusable though. re...

Re: KGV in POW's place on 10th December 1941

I find it strange that this "hypothetical naval scenario", which argues in favour of the allies, has to stick rigorously to the facts, without the flights of fancy that are allowed when discussing other hypothetical scenarios.

Re: U-Boots -------> US Subs???

Again from memory - the Russian command came under pressure, rightly so IMO, for the loss of survivors, as a result of politics taking precedence over humanity. Offers of help from several countries was declined until it was too late, because of loss of political face.

Re: BS speed - last battle

Hi Vic Once again you mention the pumping of oil from the forward bunkers, and the fact that there was no hole below the waterline. I cannot accept either proposition because of comments made by Bill Jurens, whose opinion I know we both respect because of his manner and expertise. If you read his po...

Re: U-Boots -------> US Subs???

This is stretching my memory a bit but, from what I remember, the theory is that a hydrogen peroxide explosion and fire caused the explosion of one, or more, torpedoes. Originally the Russians tried to pin the disaster on to a collision between a US sub and the Kursk. However, seismic readings from ...

Re: 67th Anniversary

Let us hope that the memories of this conflict and the events of Rheinubung, especially of the dead on both sides, will not be forgotten and used to help prevent this sort of conflict breaking out again. Ditto that but, unfortunately, the lessons of history seem too hard for us to learn. Jose - tha...

Re: BS speed - last battle

The British are the least to admit it. No real sports would I say.
Good to see that xenophobia is alive and well!!
I don't know why you are ignoring all the large-caliber shell hits to the upper hull.
Really Richard? I know exactly why.

Re: How did you come to be interested in Bismarck?

Sorry to be so late getting back to this interesting thread - ISP problems!! I guess I started with military history, and my brother's desperation to find someone to fight a wargame with. We laid out a "battlefield" on the spare bedroom floor and, using 20mm Airfix miniatures fought a Napo...

Re: RMS Titanic´s anniversary

Now I am not a trained seaman nor had officer training, From what I have read that is exactly the point RF, the fact that you are NOT trained is what would allow you to make the decision to go straight in to the berg. In an extreme, emergency situation people do what they are trained to do - which ...

So sorry, I didn't realise you had been given the job of moderator on this forum. Once again we have an AH scenario that stacks all the cards in one direction and again it is Germany. Once again we have conveniently forgotten that the British would have several additional units ready because of the delay waiting for Tirpitz to be completed and readied to sail. So, for instance, b...

Effecting a coordinated effort between surface forces and submarines seems remarkably difficult to achieve. Both sides tried it several times during WW1, without much success, and, similarly, in WW2. Even when contact was made fear of a misidentification seems to have stopped submarine commanders ta...

Interesting twist Karl

Very interesting indeed Karl. Let me preface my comments by saying that Leach would have been extremely silly to accept battle with the state of his guns after the turn away, imo. So we have to assume that some of his guns are still working, let's say 2 or 3 out of action, ok? Under these circumstan...
