Re: Holland Shadows Bismarck Instead

It may fit the made up hypotheticals, but it doesn't fit the recorded data from the October 29th run. Did you notice that John lists the immersion factor of +57.3? That fits the hard evidence. You need to recalculate based on this fact. A draught of 10.2 meters (at only about 50K?!) and the immersio...

Re: Holland Shadows Bismarck Instead

Now Mr Rico suggests that Bismarck's displacement was substantially higher than 42000 tons on 29.10.40, and this seems reasonable What I say is that the day of that speed run the Bismarck was loaded with 6,285 m3 fuel oil and 337 m3 feed water according to the KTB, and that equals to a displacement...

Re: Holland Shadows Bismarck Instead

Trying to extrapolate data from different ships, such as Richelieu, or Vanguard, and so forth, and applying it to a totally different ship results in a faulty comparison, and is therfore of little value in correctly assessing Bismarck's speed data. Besides, such guesstimates are not needed, because ...

Bismarck Sp2

...The differences in speed per power between Scharnhorst, using the curve you yourself posted, and the larger Bismarck from the specifications during the documented speed run, are noticable, and they are not out of line.. Just to elaborate and what I'm trying say. Look closely at the Scharnhorst g...

Re: Holland Shadows Bismarck Instead

Sorry, but this does make sense. An expert in marine propulsion and hydrodynamics used to drop in here years ago and lead us in some very educational discussions in the complexities of these matters. These factors are very complex. I recall that he mentioned that laymen tend to place too much emphas...

Re: Holland Shadows Bismarck Instead

No, 40k is not a real possibility. 40k is less than the ship with nothing. I have a copy of Lindemann's weight break down for March 30, 1940. All tons are metric tons. The ship with nothing but lubricating oil, and liquids, for the machinery was 41,243 tons. With ammo, provisions, drinking and wash ...

Re: Holland Shadows Bismarck Instead

I don't see a problem. First of all Scharnhorst is not exactly Bismarck, so it might not be exactly apples to apples. Bismarck was to achieve 29 knots at 138K, not 30 knots as in the case of Scharnhorst. At 150k (or 162K max for Tirpitz) I can see 30 knots as quite plausable. It adds up to me.

Re: Bismarck Speed

There's actually no evidence to indicate that Bismarck was faster than either Hood or PoW. Hood made 28.8 knots on trials in March 1941, with Paravanes streamed which was probably equal to about 29.3 knots without them, and I've produced PoW's log entry to show that she averaged 29 knots (and by de...

Re: Holland Shadows Instead

....... (a) Three radar ships should allow, for the first time, constant non-visual and (almost?) foolproof tracking. .......(c) Radio intercept technology had developed to the point that the British would be forewarned by any call for help by the Germans. The British, on the other hand could use r...

Re: Holland Shadows Instead

...... At night, the superior radar sets on the two big ships have been added to the Suffolk's so there is a triple-redundant safety net. ........ The still-undamaged German ships had a speed advantage on the Hood and PoW . But all they have to do is stay within the much-greater range of their rada...

HT has a tensile strength of up to 70k psi. An amour grade material will have a tensile strength of at least 110K psi.

....Did you know that Washington opened fire on Sendai with radar control in elevation and OPTICAL in train? And range were about 18,500yds at that time.......... Just to correct a few details as these misunderstandings are repeated quite a bit. The Washington first detected the IJN ships with it's...

I think it's likely. The proofing angle is just an angle used in tests, and it doesn't necessarily mean that it's the limit.

Re: RFC equipped Yamato vs. Iowa

I find the importance being placed upon BB sea hours to be rather missed placed and of relatively small consequence, so I will limit my comments to setting the record straight concerning the chronology of the Germans bringing naval radar into operation. Early production sets were delivered to the TV...

Re: Two KGV's vs. Yamato

Thank's for posting that graphic Dunmunro, it illustrates what I have been trying to describe with words, and it is virtually identical in shape to graphs I have plotted manually many times with pencil and paper. One of these days I may learn how to create and post graphics on a computor. A shell th...
