The sails form a rough cone around the ship where they block direct view from the crow's nest. The lookout would not be responsible for anything in that cone. IIRC the First Lt. had the overall command of the gun decks with the "Gunner", a warrant officer, honchoing the lower gun deck. This from reading 50+ years ago.

noun Nautical. a superstructure at or immediately aft of the bow of a vessel, used as a shelter for stores, machinery, etc., or as quarters for sailors. any sailors' quarters located in the forward part of a vessel, as a deckhouse.

How many sections did each pump serve? I was usually on the inport fire party for my ship and by placing the pumps strategically they got one pump serving two sections.

Does UTAH count? The IJN pilots were told EXACTLY where she would be, and that she was demilitarized. Still wasted ordnance on her.

I did a "color postcard collection" for the Naval History and Heritage Command that had most of those ships. Very US-1890s look to them. They have it online somewhere if one were interested.
