Re: How did the Lookout see?

The sails form a rough cone around the ship where they block direct view from the crow's nest. The lookout would not be responsible for anything in that cone. If another ship got so close as to be in the cone the lookout would be catching hell, of course. A situation where the lookout could miss som...

Re: Who has Authority Over the Guns?

IIRC the First Lt. had the overall command of the gun decks with the "Gunner", a warrant officer, honchoing the lower gun deck. This from reading 50+ years ago.

Every battleship design is some sort of compromise and the Americans chose to sacrifice seakeeping for speed.
The basic criteria: Power + Protection + Endurance = 1

I picture a set of sliding scales, interlocked so pushing one up pushes the other two down.

During the Battle of Leyte Gulf, Musashi was sunk by an estimated 19 torpedo and 17 bomb hits from American carrier-based aircraft on 24 October 1944. Over half of her crew was rescued. Re: Pumping capacity (fire main/damage control) and fire main diagram for the Essex class?

How many sections did each pump serve? I was usually on the inport fire party for my ship and by placing the pumps strategically they got one pump serving two sections.

And I may have misinterpreted your question, I've got an IV going right now and Ford's in his flivver.

Does UTAH count? The IJN pilots were told EXACTLY where she would be, and that she was demilitarized. Still wasted ordnance on her.

Re: USN Armor from post-ACW through Spanish-American War

I did a "color postcard collection" for the Naval History and Heritage Command that had most of those ships. Very US-1890s look to them. They have it online somewhere if one were interested.
