Re: 5"/25 on shore bombarment

Yes, it does not make much sense, except they were illuminating shells. I remember reading (in the book "The deadly fuze") that the Allies used VT fuzes near the Rhine in 1944, the shells were pointed just above the heads of the German troops and exploded when passing overhead. Yes, but t...

I don't know, but can't imagine why they would do that. Defenders were hunkered down with overhead cover.

Do you really think the Russian army we have watched fleeing in disorder from the Ukranian offensive, abandoning weapons, would make to to Calais?

Of course, and the only reason three would be fired was to be fairly certain of two hits.

Re: Frederick Dalrymple-Hamilton report.

Bismarck's shift of fire to KGV corresponds to the aft FC position taking control of the main battery. The after turrets don't seem to have been in action until then, which makes me wonder why their fire wasn't directed to a different target while the main battery was shooting at Rodney. Were all th...

Re: US evaluation of Prinz Eugen, comments on radars etc.

I think Prinz Eugen's conformal sonar was the one removed and installed on a US submarine. If not Prinz Eugen, it came from another German ship or submarine. It was impressive in testing and became the basis for the BQR series of USN submarine passive sonars, and AFAIK it still is today, although of...

Yes, well ... why not an entire fleet? That seems to be the way you are going. Want to give the Japanese some DDs and a cruiser or two?

Re: Shells fired by Prinz Eugen

Gentlemen, I would think that trying to unload a heavy shell and cordite was likely to be a bit difficult and possibly hazardous. so when a battle was over did any guns that were still loaded get fired off, or did they try and unload them? Normally fired; also referred to as "unloading through...

Hope you enjoy! I loved the 15 inchers being loaded!
Really entertaining, although Bismarck's main battery didn't use bag propellant. Amazing job, though!

I'd try to contact the family. If you can get in touch, offer it to them and suggest that if they would like you would donate it to a historical organization like a museum.

No, probably pointless with an artificial "penalty" like that. Assume shells with no defects or gas pockets.

Re: British 4.5"/45 (11.4 cm) vs American 5"/38 (12.7 cm) Mark 12

We have no way of knowing how many of the kills by 40mm and 20mm were seriously damaged by 5" fire before they got within range of the former, but the CIWS would always get credit for the kill.
