Re: Are the Iowas Battlecruisers?

Can you elaborate on that a bit M. Opana?

THX.

Re: Was the H.M.S Hood the most powerful ship for 20 years?

OP I have to wonder about Friedman's rationale for putting living arrangements under "speed" given that you also can't FIRE if the crew isn't functioning. Come to think of it, being slow under that rationale should perhaps BOOST the "Defense" rating since the ship that can't get ...

Are the Iowas Battlecruisers?

Gentlemen:

A question of no practical import just for fun.

Were the Iowas battlecruisers? I would say yes. Sacrificed gun power (vs. the Montanas) and armor protection (pretty mediocre) for speed.

What say you?

Re: Was the H.M.S Hood the most powerful ship for 20 years?

I've always had a weak spot for Hood--perhaps because I like my capital ships like I like my women: long, sleek, lovely--and with mediocre resistance. :D

Re: A correct attribution for the "Flash Effect" photo?

Forgive me for not going back and re-reading the entire thread but: are the "once per day" and 150 word limit rules board-wide or limited to this thread? If boardwide, I presume one could make one post in more than one thread, provided one did not make more than one post in a singe thread ...

Re: A correct attribution for the "Flash Effect" photo?

My experience has been that the attribution and pedigree of various photographs and film clips, in the absence of clearly identifiable visual clues in the image itself, tends to be somewhat problematical. This is true throughout World War II. Unfortunately, only a proportion of the photos presented...

Re: The USN vs. the Royal Navy

A belated thanks for all of your interesting replies gentlemen. Wadinga: I am aware that the RN was embroiled with Nappy and could have crushed the USN had it diverted all its resources to that purpose. My focus was on those encounters that did actually happen however, as to which the USN had a much...

Re: Brittle Fracture and torpedo resistance

I think Bill Jurens pointed out, with respect to a question about the "Maine" investigation, that the first explosive impetus on plating does not necessarily determine where it is going to wind up: i.e., just because plating was dished in doesn't mean the explosion came from outside.

Re: The Greatest Naval Battle in History

Personally would not consider Midway be a naval battle--at least for "greatest naval battle" purposes.

That was an air battle.

Thanks for posting this Jose.

You guys are definitely right about the technology--it's evolving, but is still a long way from being able to beat you at chess.......

The USN vs. the Royal Navy

I am NOT trying to start a flame war here gents. In combat vs. each other, both sides gained plenty of laurels. Both sides were the best (ship v. ship) that the other ever faced. Why did the USN do so much better vs. the RN than anyone else? You would think that the French (with their money, history...

Re: Yamato and Musashi

With the Deutschland class the difference was calculated to about 15%, unless my sources are wrong. This is more plausible than 2%, considering that riveting requires overlap joints and much more framing. You have to a make a distinction from hull weight (IE the part of the ship that can be welded)...

Re: Old men's memories

I was witness to a shot-gun style murder many years ago, and attempted to assist the victim. Many memories. Many police photographs. Years later, met a woman who's brother was one of the police officers involved, and who -- probably somewhat unethically -- arranged to show me some of the photos of ...
