Re: Tovey's decision

I thought you'd been saying that PoW actually shot very well at DS, that her output was as great as any other battleship. Are you saying that KGV would have sunk Bismarck in the few minutes she required to sink Hood? I'm afraid I don't understand what you're trying to say. Pow was not fully worked ...

Re: Tovey's decision

Gentlemen, Many thanks for all your replies. I suppose this next question ought to be under 'hypothetical situations' it may have been posed to you before but I could not find it, so please forgive my ignorance. In your expert opinions, what would the outcome have been if Tovey had taken KGV & ...

Re: Tovey's decision

Additionally, the 15" UW hit on PoW was nowhere near a magazine.

PoW's hit forward on Bismarck cut off access to fuel oil in forward tanks, while the hit amidships did cause leakage from oil tanks there.

Re: Naval gunnery accuracy - question for M. Jurens

I loved that game. I contacted him with the idea of reprogramming it in C, but unfortunately I didn't get anywhere and it died. He also wrote a computer game: http://www.mobygames.com/game/dos/action-stations Which I have buried somewhere. As I recall, I found the game interesting but the hit accur...

Re: Bismarck/Tirpitz = most powerfull European battleships

There are lots of myths, misconceptions and "best guesses" about side protection systems/torpedo defence systems in the WW2 era. . Phil, I suspect that mistaken information regarding the SPS performance on PoW had a hand in the above tests, and their interpretation. The other thing to rem...

Re: Bismarck/Tirpitz = most powerfull European battleships

The British rating is so high that many have called this into question. I don't know, but the North Carolina's larger and similar system is not rated that high. Bismarck's system tested good to at least 600lbs tnt according to the US technical mission findings despite its official rating. NC's syst...

Re: Bismarck/Tirpitz = most powerfull European battleships

After the Prince of Wales disaster, the British design was revised. The main revisions on Vanguard were to extend the wing tanks bukhead's height all the way to the main armoured deck above, so that flooding could not occur over top of the system. Vanguard's SPS liquid layer was extended one deck h...

How did Vanguard's TDS compare to Tirpitz's?

Thank you
Vanguard's SPS was designed to defeat an 1100lb TNT charge, amidships.

Re: Tovey's decision

Tovey had 4 fast capital ships: Hood, PoW, KGV and Repulse. Repulse was a last minute reinforcement. Tovey did not know where Lutjens intended to breakout and thus had to disperse his forces to cover the various possible routes. If Tovey had know for certain where Lutjens was heading then he would h...

Re: Newsreel of KGV class

For some reason this video won't play on my PC. I notice it is titled ''HMS London at sea'' I believe that the London was a heavy cruiser and not a KGV..... The first ~15sec features a distant shot of HMS London, and the rest is mainly a KGV steaming through heavy seas. You might try to upgrade you...

Re: What was the most effective naval anti-aircraft gun of WW2?

I couldn't see it because the software required is not available yet for windows 7 - 64 bit. OK, here's a mosaic from 3:37 to 3:40.45: http://www.sfu.ca/~dmunro/images/525_filmclip.jpg The clip doesn't show the flash prior to 3:37 because it was edited out but the rest of the sequence is pretty cle...

5.25 loading cycle - 4 secs!

At 3:37 of this film clip you can see a 5.25" turret firing at a ~4sec interval:

Re: FOrce Z anniversary

The RTU also had a power followup for range and thus the radar operator would match the range via the cursor and then set the range rate so that the cursor would stay on target without operator intervention, as long as the target maintained a steady speed and course.

Re: FOrce Z anniversary

I stand corrected. This is certainly at odds with Howse and some ASE documents including hand books. Conical scanning radar is still a major step beyond the earlier systems when it comes to the practical tracking and targeting of aircraft, especally at sea. Even into the 50's and beyond more advanc...
