Re: Tiger Kills and Losses
I don't say this with any kind of malice but that attitude is entirely behind the silly claims often advanced for German tanks. They did not 'do well'. They were comprehensively ground into the dust by an enemy they picked to fight and at a time they picked to fight. I despair at this constant refe...

Re: Tiger Kills and Losses
mkenny, so your point is that although all sides inflated their kill rates the Germans did so to a greater extent, correct?

Re: Tiger Kills and Losses
... When I see someone claiming an IS II knocked out 50 German tanks then I will say it is unbelievable and highly unlikely. To date all the silly stories seem to concern lone Tigers. ... I think I've seen some pretty impressive ones about an IS tank or sometimes even a T-34 ... the details don't s...

Re: Tiger Kills and Losses
...If we look at the overall picture, Germany produced about 50,000 AFVs (Tigers, Panthers, Pz.I, II, III, IV, SPG, Stugs, etc). They lost the war so we can say they lost all of them. The Allies lost about 100,000 AFVs during the war, most of them Soviet. So the ratio is about 2:1. But even here we...

Re: Tiger Kills and Losses
...Considering how outnumbered the Germans were, I think they did very well. Don't you think? No Tiger could stop an enemy tank corps for 3 days, but still... I don't think any here have ever contended that the Germans didn't put up a pretty tough defence. The contention has always been the extreme...

Re: Tiger Kills and Losses
Jentz rarely includes command tanks and other specialised tanks in his totals. For 15/1/45 the full numbers were: East: Tanks [/u] 1175 'in service' (67% in service) 589 'in repair' (33% in repair)) 486 'in transit' total 2250 Stug [/u]: 1803 'in service' (82% in service) 394 'in repair' (18% in re...

Re: Tiger Kills and Losses
The info comes from the book 'Soviet Casualties And Combat Losses In The Twentieth Century' (G.F Krivosheev) and the total is for tanks and SP guns for the 'Berlin Operation'. 1st Belorussian Front reported the loss of 916 tanks/SPG (14/4/45 - 3/5/45) and 1st Ukranian lost 593 tanks/259 SPG (16/4/4...

Re: Tiger Kills and Losses
Perhaps you should re-read Krivosheev before claiming 2000 tanks were lost. Get back to me after you check. 1st GTA, 2nd GTA and 3rd GTA between them lost 645 tanks in Berlin (16/4/45 - 9/5/45) Sorry I don't know who Krivosheev is. :( I got that data the other day from the internet. Can't find the ...

Re: Tiger Kills and Losses
mkenny, but then how did the Soviets lose 2,000 tanks in two weeks?
* Note 2,000 is the figure given by the Soviets. Did they apply a 50% reduction too?

Re: Tiger Kills and Losses
Hello, here are my 2 cents about the battle of Berlin. Soviet casualty figures 81,116 KIA/MIA 280,251 WIA. Total casualties: 361,367 1,997 tanks 2,108 artillery pieces/mortars 917 planes That figures are given by the soviets so the actual numbers are probably higher. So we have about 2,000 tanks los...

Iowa Class: Armor Protection
Iowa Class: Armor Protection One of the main characteristics of a battleship is its ability to withstand an attack. Few ships from the past and no modern ships can equal the survivability of the Iowa Class Battleships. The decision of where to armor and how much armor to use is a very complicated a...

Firing at pilots who have parachuted
Was it OK, legal by internatinal law to open fire at pilots who parachuted during a dogfight? Did exist a "code of honor" among enemy pilots not to shoot themselves if they were shot down? What about enemy paratroopers dropped behind enemy lines? Soldiers are allowed to shoot at them while...

Re: Scharnhorst FuMB passive receiver
Thank you Tommy. What about hydrophones? Sound signals are picked up underwater and the receiving station should be safe below decks right? Is it possible the device was off or maybe they picked up the sound of several other ships... It is somehow difficult to believe that Scharnhorst was ta...

Scharnhorst FuMB passive receiver
Reading last night about Scharnhorst final battle let me wondering. Duke of York obtained first radar contact with Scharnhorst at 1617 hours, distance 42,500 meters (46,480 yards). She didn't open fire until half an hour later when range decreased to 10,900 meters (11,920 yards). Question: Why weren...
