Re: Message Traffic heard by RODNEY 24 May 1941
She turned away and Bismarck and PE continued on her course, but the german fleet commander decided to break off the entire operation No, Bismarck and Prinz Eugen did not pursue Prince of Wales. They kept their course, and, at 6:03/4, turned away themselves after reports of torpedos coming their wa...

Re: Hit on Bismarck's turret
@ Alexandros: You will note that I was not specific about the source of the initiation of the deflagration, if that's what was indeed observed. There are actually quite a few well-documented instances where turrets and barbettes were penetrated with subsequent burnouts and/or explosions etc. Bill J...

Re: More on KGV Class main armament problems
To mark the anniversary of the sinking of Hood here are some more items of original documentation. All are Crown Copyright. The first confirms that the gun trials carried out shortly before her first mission, gave the Admiralty representatives who were aboard the "impression" things were ...

Re: Hit on Bismarck's turret
While theoretically possible, I have never read about such an internal deflagration being produced in any shell vs turret or shell vs barbette impacts of capital ships. Instances are numerous - Massachussets vs Jean Bart *, Kirishima vs South Dakota** , Hood vs Richelieu*** , Renown vs Gneisenau****...

If everybody would follow this example it would solve the problem quickly. I can only encourage everybody to do the same in order to restore rationality, purpose, and common sense in the forum. There is nothing to be gained in providing a stage and audience for this kind of behavior and endless rep...

Re: Hit on Bismarck's turret
You're right,
that would put max travel distance with average fuze length at ~ 13 meters, and maybe 6-7 meters applying the speed reduction (for remaining velocity).

Re: Hit on Bismarck's turret
British APC projectiles of the time had average fuze length of 0.025sec. Impact velocity at 20.000meters for 16" shells was 470m/s (data for firing velocity of 770m/s), and 460m/s for 14" guns (data for firing velocity of 730m/s). That means that, on average, the fuzed fuze would permit tr...

Re: Message Traffic heard by RODNEY 24 May 1941
Big difference between these engagements in my opinion. North Cape was fought at night in Force 5 weather conditions and certainly worse visibility conditions. Much of Duke of York's shooting was conducted as radar-controlled "blind fire". Her Type 284 was of an improved model, but was st...

I invite you to think and try to understand my posting again, in particular the last paragraph. I invite you to reconsider your attitude , as you are not in a position to criticise people who produced substantial research on their free time and consuming their energy. Your irrelevant replies and me...

History is not Mathematics, but both need to operate under scientific principles if they intend to have any purpose. For the rest of your statements, I invite you to read (and try to understand) my posting again, in particular the last paragraph. Squirming around the arguments won't help you escape...

History is not mathematics.
This reconstruction is the "best" only until a better one comes along.
So far you and other members have been repeatedly asked to provide a better alternative , which you failed to do.

Re: Message Traffic heard by RODNEY 24 May 1941
FWIW, I have records, from USN target practices, of quite a few first salvo straddles on targets at ranges well over 20,000 yards, even before WWII. So such an occurrence, while unusual, was by no means unknown, especially if the first salvo pattern was fairly large. Bill Jurens I don't discount th...
