Plunging fire

Morning, all. I searched but couldn't find anything on this topic. My knowledge of dynamics and mechanics is limited to first year mathematics at university - and that was 35 years ago - so I apologise in advance if it's a stupid question. When we calculate the flight of a shell, we assume it's foll...

Re: Newer technology. Help or hindrance in a rescue?

Hello guys, I am three quarter's of the way through reading the book 'A time to die: The kirsk disaster'. For those of you who do not know the history of the Kirsk in the year 2000 the Russian Submarine Kursk sank due to a explosion with one of the Torpedoes on the Northern fleet training. When the...

Re: question about armor construction/assembly

Homogenous armour could be and usually was successfully welded by the late 1930s. This formed a continuous peice. There was still the heat effected zone, which could be of lesser ductility but higher strength, and the weld metal was usually undermatched in terms of tensile strength and hardness. Ho...

Re: Twins v Warspite & Valiant

@Dave Another aspect is destructive potential of the shell. It's one thing to have a 11" exploding in the machinery spaces (300kg shell with 6.6kg of explosive charge), and a completely different story having a 15" there (800kg shell with 20kg explosive charge) This concept is evidence ag...

Re: Twins v Warspite & Valiant

Dave, my sources aren't the best but is it possible that a long range shell, arcing in from astern is going to hit the upper armoured deck (50mm) and then the thinner part of the main armour deck (20mm vs the thicker 50mm directly above the vitals)? The 14" shell would have a reasonable chance ...
