Re: Naval Battles of Guadalcanal

Dave I put this thought to you; and please say whether you agree or not as the case may be :- The US Navy, not unlike the RN I am sure, has it's way of dealing with poor command decisions/conduct in combat. While nothing may be said "officially" or appear on paper anywhere, because that wo...

Re: Naval Battles of Guadalcanal

alecsandros http://www.cv6.org/1942/santacruz/santacruz_4.htmI It is nearly impossible now to reconcile the various accounts of the number of planes downed in this engagement. Enterprise's Fighting Ten claimed 17 enemy planes, at a cost of seven Wildcats and four pilots. Hornet's VF-72 claimed 28 pl...

Re: Naval Battles of Guadalcanal

I accept the account of the ammunition used Thorsten; but that is by no means a measure of how many targets that ammunition found. As Enterprise points they had all the deflection shots whereas SoDak was a 1000 yds away.

Re: Greatest Warship Name Ever

I favour ILLUSTRIOUS and VICTORIOUS as splendid names for two very hard fought "capital" ships in WW2.Typically RN names of course; but meaningful.

"The battle between South Dakota, Washington, and Kirishima was one of the few batles the USn heavy units fought at night. South Dakota's "laurels" came from an unknowing American press, subject to navy PR and slavering for "the good story" at all costs, including fact check...

BATTLE FOR SAIPAN-13 JUNE-9 JULY 1944

Bombardment of Saipan began on 13 June 1944. Fifteen battleships were involved, and 165,000 shells were fired. Seven modern fast battleships delivered twenty-four hundred 16 in (410 mm) shells, but to avoid potential minefields, fire was from a distance of 10,000 yd (9,100 m) or more, and crews were...

Re: THE BATTLE FOR TARAWA-20-23 NOV.1943

Two of the "lucky" ones Dave-the relative who would not talk about those battles- does not surprise me-because Bloody Tarawa,Saipan and Iwo Jima must have seemed like a "Season in Hell" for either soldier or marine who was actually in combat with the Japanese.

Re: 10 moments that changed the course of the war at sea

The raid on the coast of France at the town of Dieppe, in August of 1942, was the first time that the Canadians fought directly against the Nazis, on land. They had been active in the air, with many RCAF victories by fighter planes and massive bombing raids by number 6 heavy bomber group, flying fro...
