Re: Tirpitz and Graf Zeppelin 1941
GZ's sistership was never named, though some writers persist in claiming it was named Peter Strasser. If construction had not been interrupted, GZ would not have been operational until 1943, or perhaps the very end of 1942. A sortie into the open Atlantic in Nov 1941 could have been disastrous for G...

Re: Tirpitz shelling New York
I'm wondering what air assets were there in May 1941 and then in Feb 1942.

Re: H class guns on Tirpitz
One inch of deck adds 600+ tons. How much turret increase would that buy you?

Re: H class guns on Tirpitz
I'd go with a turret armor upgrade.

Re: H class guns on Tirpitz
To be precise, we don't know that Holland's purpose was to protect his deck armor. But we need to understand that penetration of deck armor is not the same as penetration of belt armor. The RN's stated preference for shorter ranges derived in part from the idea that deck hits were more likely to pro...

Re: H class guns on Tirpitz
To get good comparisons of armor penetration, you have to use the same type of armor and a range of obliquities.
Internal damage from exploding shells results from the synergistic load of explosive and ballistic energy and metallic mass.

Re: Tirpitz shelling New York
Tirpitz will not be entering New York Harbor unless the orders specify littering the harbor bottom with 40,000 tons of German steel. There's nothing worth shooting at on Staten Island (although I'd really enjoy inserting a punchline here), so there's not much in line-of-sight. Maybe Elco in Bayonne,...

Re: 8.4.1940 Admiral Hipper v Glow Worm
I think you mistook the point. The Royal Navy, as a military body, far exceeded the power of most possible opponents, yet Glowworm found herself individually at a disadvantage. As I remember it, Glowworm's senior surviving officer stated that the ship had lost steering control during the gun battle,...

Re: Tirpitz shelling New York
This is a nuisance raid, so random shells would be sufficient.Given that Tirpitz will need to close to something less than that unless she just wants to lob random shells into New York

Re: Tirpitz shelling New York
The Germans had learned in mid-1941 that it was no longer possible to send turbine warships into the open Atlantic. Sending Tirpitz all the way to New York would simply be Germany's way of making life easier for the Allies.

New Battlecruiser Booklet
My new title, Thunder in Its Courses: Essays on the Battlecruiser, has just been released. Electronic versions are available on both sides of the Atlantic, and print versions should be ready in a matter of days. The subtitle is self-explanatory, but here's the promotional blurb to further explain: F...

Re: French Battleships
The paired guns in each quad turret had limited independence; for the most part they had to elevate together. For them to fire in separate salvos, their rate of fire would have to be slowed. I think the rate of fire, rather than dispersion, is the primary symptom of the main batteries' inefficiency....

Re: Japan's motivations for empire and its justification
That was after WWI.The actions of the IJA during the ''rape of Nanking'' was described as ''indescribable brutality'' by the ambassador of Nazi Germany to China. For the nazies to recognise it as brutal would suggest that most other people would see it as something worse.

Re: Japan's motivations for empire and its justification
Are we justified in calling Japan's policy generally brutal, or was that simply the manifestation after WWI?
