Re: More on KGV Class main armament problems

I am a bit confused about Mr. Virtuani's statements along the lines of "All the records will be released and published in a couple of years..." etc. Why not just release them now, use the evidence to demolish your detractors, and establish your credibility as we speak? An argument may be m...

Re: More on KGV Class main armament problems

I'm not a lawyer, but... Regarding copyright, I would consider that in this particular situation, the posting of small excerpts such as these would fall under a category usually termed 'fair use', which allows the reproduction of small segments of nominally copyrighted material without restriction i...

Re: Hit on Bismarck's turret

The physical evidence regarding the time at which Bruno's back plate(s) may have been detached is silent. There is none. It might be possible to infer via the position of damage to the deck below approximately on what bearing the turret was trained when the plates fell off the back, if that's indeed...

Re: Hit on Bismarck's turret

@ Alecandros: My apologies about getting your name wrong. The main problem lies, I think, in attempting to assemble a coherent and accurate reconstruction from the evidence available, which is, as we all know somewhat fragmentary and contradictory. It's my recollection that many accounts seem to sug...

Re: Hit on Bismarck's turret

@ Alexandros: You will note that I was not specific about the source of the initiation of the deflagration, if that's what was indeed observed. There are actually quite a few well-documented instances where turrets and barbettes were penetrated with subsequent burnouts and/or explosions etc. Bill Ju...

Re: More on KGV Class main armament problems

Thank you for this. Most interesting. There is not problem in posting images where the text is lengthy and the context of the source is potentially important, i.e. seeing if the original was in typescript, handwritten, or typeset. The problem lies in posting small snippets, heavily underlined and an...

Re: Hit on Bismarck's turret

The descriptions of this event are, as usual, often somewhat vague and contradictory, so it's difficult to do other than speculate. Rather than an exploding shell, I suspect that if any large flash or flame was seen it was more likely due to the venting of deflagrating propellant, i.e. some evidence...

Re: Message Traffic heard by RODNEY 24 May 1941

FWIW, I have records, from USN target practices, of quite a few first salvo straddles on targets at ranges well over 20,000 yards, even before WWII. So such an occurrence, while unusual, was by no means unknown, especially if the first salvo pattern was fairly large.

Re: Message Traffic heard by RODNEY 24 May 1941

Participants may wish to make use of the Control Panel option to set 'Friends' and 'Foes', which allows one to block messages from a specified 'Foe' more-or-less entirely. If one wishes to register discontent or disagreement without becoming entangled, and still read contributions from a foe, one al...

Re: Message Traffic heard by RODNEY 24 May 1941

It is my impression here that most of the discussions, though often in a highly indirect manner, seem to revolve around the following hypotheses, primarily championed by mssrs. Bonomi (who no longer paricipates) and Mr. Virtuani. In essence, I interpret these to be: a) That a historical analysis and...

Please try to exercise a bit more restraint in the tone and content of your postings here.

Re: Message Traffic heard by RODNEY 24 May 1941

Once again, I would ask members to at least try to maintain a reasonable and respectful tone in discussions here. We are clearly, once again, drifting away from that. As a personal note, even if very precise gunnery information was available for the firing rates and salvo intervals of various ships ...

OK.

Might you clarify one more time your reasons for not sharing any more information on the Vickers report, apparently with anyone?

Re: Message Traffic heard by RODNEY 24 May 1941

Mr. Vituani wrote: "However, (reason is here: viewtopic.php?f=1&t=8523&p=82952&hilit=keep+word#p82952), I will not explain to you why Barben's report was never sent to the Admiralty." I am confused. Are you suggesting that you are withholding the actual reason why the report wa...
