Re: World best soldiers ever
Hi All! Since I'm an American and might be biased, I'll just say that the Western Pact soldiers in Desert Storm (mostly American) are one of the top two. They pulled off a successful massive land invasion although as attackers they were 1 to 1 with long entrenched defenders. Sure they had overwhelm...

Re: Sabot shells
Gentlemen, In the book 'The Hunt for Red October' the end scene is the US navy preparing to do battle with Soviet forces and one of the US ships is an 'Iowa' class battleship (New Jersey I think). Instead of her normal 16" shells she has a small 8" in a sabot which can be fired at some en...

The US Super Heavy 16" shells did not have poor results at oblique impact.

Re: AAA over Tripoli
The 'getting a taxi' line is part of the fun. If you have a sense of humour that is. Millions will know. I think I have a sense of humor, but I'm afraid I just don't get it. :( Obviously there is AAA because they are shooting in the general direction of coalition aircraft. My first thought is they ...

Re: Th story of the Hood and the Bismarck is 'cool' and 'awe
I have, and I suspect that you are aware from the multitude of previous posts on this forum, that I have seen and commented on a lot of recent war films. I think that my post made it clear that I was referring to the output of US and British films made in a much earlier period, and even today a lot...

Re: Th story of the Hood and the Bismarck is 'cool' and 'awe
This is the whole problem isn't it? War is sanitized into something clean and painless, by removing all the blood and guts in what you see. A lot of western films are like this, where you have gunfights with no blood or visible injuries, the man shot dead just falls to the ground without suffering ...

I would have hoped you would care about killing millions of people and not just the land that is then unavailable.

Re: Bismarck vs. Iowa
My recollection of the report of the loss of PoW mentioned that that "venting" space was responsible for progressive flooding over the top of the TDS, and that modifications were recommended to carry the TDS up another level and not to locate things like crew facilities within it, which w...

Yes, the fuel issue is dealt with in some detail in "Black Shoe Carrier Admiral". It was a continuing problem for Fletcher. There weren't enough tankers arriving in theater.

Re: The future of Europe
Most people don't realize that a no fly zone has always involved suppressing AA installations, and then you have western aircraft attacking Moslems and civilian casualties. The Great Satan strikes again. In the mean time over here you have the right wing media roasting Obama for not having done a no...

Re: Plunging fire
From the Baron's account where he talks about water lapping over the deck around the after turrets at the end, and iirc Rodney's account where the ship seemed to be quite low in the water at the end of the engagement. It didn't list very much until the very end, and of course scuttling charges were ...

Noone wants to become involved in another middle east war. It's a terrible tragedy for those involved, and it's not looking very good for them.

Re: Plunging fire
Thorsten, when I say the "citadel" I mean the belt. Of course there will be lots of hits. The belt was almost submerged by the time Rodney was that close. She was firing "down 200" or so in an effort to get underwater hits. It was almost impossible because hits short would come b...
