Re: H class Battleships

As for the results. I would expect both sides to have at least one heavily damaged battleship. The looser is likely to have at least 3 heavily damaged and the winner one or two with moderate damage to another one or two. I'd give the allies an edge although the Germans could pull an upset in the fir...

Re: H class Battleships

The British are alsmost sure to have at least on CV in the area more likely a couple. If the US is involved I would expect at least a pair of fast battleships with some of the older battleships on convoy duty. Likewise I would expect the US to have a CV or two involved and likely a handfull of Briti...

Re: Washington

Gentlemen, Forgive me for intruding on this discussion, but when Bismarck was cornered and unable to steer with her company in a fairly demoralised state, did she not make some pretty impressive shooting against Rodney (who was able to manouver) before the combined weight of shells destoyed her off...

Re: Washington

So where in the post above were my errors? Please read again my comment, and look up the references; than we can talk. You claimed that there were multiple errors in my post just previous to yours. On the otherhand you didn't point to a single one and when asked for clarification you avoid doing so...

Re: Washington

There are to many errors in your posts above. Really? Let see. First of all, PoW gunnery problems were mechanical problems , having little to do with crew training. Kind of hard to train on the equipment if it isn't working right or technicians are trying to fix it isn't it? Firing 55 shells out of...

Re: Washington

@lwd Why Do you think BS was fully worked up? The Baron mentioned that it would have need 24 months to fully traib the crew and do all necessary tests. Also the AVKs mentioned the lack of training and tests. ... Looking for instance at the USS Colorado it looks like she was fully worked up after ~1...

Re: H class Battleships

... What line up would you have for the RN If it was just the RN looking and looking at wiki for info on the Lions and H classes and comparing with the KGV's and Bismarck's if the battle took place infairly early 43 I would expect the RN to have 2 Lions completed and 2 more working up. Since the ga...

Re: H class Battleships

This is a rather curious option: ... Let's assume that two H class battleships were begun, and one was converted to an aircraft carrier half way through. ... 1 large aircraft carrier converted from H-39 class hull ... The implication is that something has convinced the Germans that aircraft carriers...

Re: Washington

... Nothing to be ashame of, as far as the crew goes, but not up to Bismarck's output, precision or hit ratio nonetheless.. And why would you expect a crew of mostly new recruits with only a couple of months on the ship to be up to a fully worked up ship? Indeed given that she was having major issu...

Re: Washington

... At first salvos, it had 10 guns operational. While technically accurate a bit misleading isn't it? For the first salvoes her rear turret was unusable and she lost a gun for A turret with the first salvo so until she turned she was down to 5 guns after the first 6 gun salvo (if it was a full sal...

Re: Destroyers in the Pacific

From what I recall the KM DD's tended to be a bit top heavy and short legged. On the other US DD's got pretty top heavy as well. The lack of a good heavy AA gun might be a weakness in the Pacfic. The 5.9" gun of the bigger DD's would probably help vs cruisers especially heavies but the lower ra...

Re: H class Battleships

That would explain why Germany was almost bankrupt in the late 30's and the Cancelation of both the Hindenburg and the H class vessels ... I don't understand this comment. Germany had economic problems in the late 1930's but they were structural not financial. Most countries governments control the...

Re: H class Battleships

... So we have a potential order of battle: 1 H-39 Bismarck and Tirpitz 1 large aircraft carrier converted from H-39 class hull 1 Graf zeppelin ... We can also work out a likely meeting place for the engagement(s). I would assume a similar Atlantic commerce raiding expedition as saw the demise of t...

Re: Task Force 34 vs. Kurita's Center Force

... the brilliance of Admiral Kurita. He was overmatched by what he found, and would have behaved no differently if confronted by a Battle line. I'm not at all certain of this. The tactics he used vs Taffey 3 weren't that bad if he had as he though caught up with a batch of fleet carriers. Vs. a ba...
