Re: Bismarck original KTB still existing ?

Hi all, Great to speculate, but do you really think documents would survive over 70 years under pressure of water 15,000 feet down - even in a water-proof bag or safe? We might have a better chance of finding the supposed photos of Hood's demise taken from PoW (from the IWM interview of that PoW cre...

Re: Bismarck original KTB still existing ?

Hi Alberto! Hope you're doing fine! Such a mouth-watering idea, but unfortunately yes crazy! If the ship's documents weren't destroyed in the shelling, when the order to scuttle was given, wouldn't they have been destroyed by responsible officers to ensure they don't fall into enemy hands in case sc...

Royal Navy at War - A Sailor's View

Hi all, I've just discovered a series of documentaries posted on Youtube in January 2017 that feature some great footage of the RN in various phases of the war and thought I'd share. I'll just post the link to the ones I've watched in its entirety so far - the first features colour footage. Royal Na...

Re: Jasper, Schmalenbach and 6 salvos...

@Alecsandros, That link is a war game from 2005. Brinkmann put the wind at Force 3 at 0600 (8 - 12 mph, 7 - 10 knots). It was at midnight on the 24th that Leach had the wind at Force 4 - 5 from the north. @Alberto, Sure the smoke is dispersing, but the boat deck fire flared big and then died down so...

Re: Jasper, Schmalenbach and 6 salvos...

Hi Duncan, I see what you're saying. But under my theory, the gabelgruppe accounts for 3 salvos. This involves firing A+B (long), then after a short interval C+D (middle) then, after re-load, A+B again (short). The gap between the first two may be shorter than that between the second two. To go to v...

Re: Jasper, Schmalenbach and 6 salvos...

Hi guys, Just sticking my nose in since my name's been being called in a few posts. And I do appreciate the spirit in which it has been called whether by those who think my scenario bears some credence or those who think it's wrong. But, for the discussion on Bismarck's open fire time (which this th...

Re: Jasper, Schmalenbach and 6 salvos...

That's the reason why I think (my personal opinion only) that the PG film (lasting approx. from 6:03:40 till 6:05, while BS was on a steady course 270° herself, after the turn away due to "torpedoes", and PoW was still turning and zig-zag-ing) is not actually showing a "fire for effe...

Re: Jasper, Schmalenbach and 6 salvos...

Hi all. @ Alberto: Yes I understand your interpretation and, from the other thread, Mark's, but the wording still seems ambiguous to me and my interpretation was the same as Alecsandros' - and it seems Brinkmann's too when he stated that the fire was started after PG's second salvo. It still puzzles...

Re: Jasper, Schmalenbach and 6 salvos...

the order is executive when the JD flag is lowered , I guess. At the same time Lutjens would have transmitted the order to Lindemann.... Nope: Jot Dora JD Signal code used by the German ships for the command to "Permission to fire at will" or "Commence firing when ready". http:/...

Re: Jasper, Schmalenbach and 6 salvos...

Hi all, Although I've said I was comfortable with the open fire time of 0555 for the Germans, I really find this discussion very thought-provoking. There are so many contradictions surrounding the action that I fear we cannot resolve definitively. I'm keeping an open mind - as Wadinga said - rigidly...

Re: That 0555 turn....

Being the navigating officer, and having to draw a map (even simplified), knowing exactly (in case of the "5:55" 20° turn to port) when it was ordered (5:55) and when it was executed (between 5:57 and 5:58), I would have drawn the map with a sharp turn at 5:57:30 (the mid point of the tur...

Re: That 0555 turn....

However, why did Rowell draw the turn exactly at 5:55 as a sharp turn instead of showing a "soft" course change from 5:57 till 5:58, as he certainly did at 6:00 with the emergency avoiding maneuver ? Is this just a simplification from Rowell (as for the turn at 5:50, the one at 6:10 etc.)...

Re: That 0555 turn....

Hi Alberto and Cag, Re; Rowell's statement about 2 minutes - be careful of your interpretation of an "order" versus the "execution" in Rowell's statement: Immediately after being hit, the Vice-Admiral hoisted the signal for a turnaway together of 20 degrees. This was executed abo...

Re: That 0555 turn....

Hi all, Alberto, I must concede to your judgement that blast could affect PoW's catapult deck area. I recalled Renown's self inflicted damage off Norway in 1940, that her hangar doors were damaged by Y-turret firing on a forward bearing to starboard. Checking the details: Both hangar doors were wrec...

Re: That 0555 turn....

Hi guys, Here is the quote from Leach''s narrative re the aircraft: Visibility continued to improve and by 0430 was about 12 miles. Consequently orders were given to refuel the aircraft. Owing to delays, principally on account of water in the fuel, aircraft was not ready until after fire had been op...
