Re: The Railgun!
My greatest question is how the great electromagnetic charge that is sent down the barrel is neutralized so it doesnt decelerate the acceleration of the projectile? I cant think of a way that it would just discharge at the end of the barrel... and if you sent it back down the barrel it would work ag...

Re: What is needed to sink a US Navy task force?
I did not realize that the nuke boats had anchors? Or was it exclusively the ones that were modified for Special Operations? By the way, I understand your predicament and do not wish to push you into saying anything... anyways most of it is declassified... I just can't put my finger on that original...

I remember it was a Sturgeon... although I vaguely remember something about modifications... I'll try to find the source!

Re: What is needed to sink a US Navy task force?
I seem to recall "Black Missions" back in the Cold War where a USN Sturgeon or Los Angeles class situated itself onto the seafloor while a dive team left the sub, placed line taps on Soviet communications, and returned to the submarine. Or did I just hear some old, high end, conspiracy the...

Re: Lutzow vs. US heavy cruiser
Heavy Cruisers of the USN had little or no TDS, besides compartmentizing of course, so a hit beneath the waterline would prove very destructive to the ship's innards. I am not sure however of the armor and defensive capabilities of those upper works above the waterline.

Converted ships would gain the ability to defend themselves more effectively against aerial and submerged targets.

Re: Lutzow vs. US heavy cruiser
Dunmunro my friend, I believe that for the American Baltimores the second set of numbers you described, the one with a MaxVelocity of 2,500 feet per second, is the most accurate. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/8%22/55_caliber_gun The Baltimores used a varying mix of Mark 12 and Mark 15 models of the 8...

Re: Top ten most powerful navies in the world
Doesn't that seem logical though? India is up against one ocean, the Indian Ocean, so they will naturally design their navy to sail and protect those waters. WHAT IF a US task force wandered through the Indian Ocean and was subsequently attacked and destroyed? Would the Indian Navy count then? Thoug...

Re: Brooklyn V Mogami
You are right my friend, of all the cruisers in WWII of all nations, the Brooklyn class had the highest broadside weight and highest RoF combination, resulting in a class of ships with unparalleled firepower. The later Des Moines CA's, Oregon City CA's, Alaska CC's, German Gneisenau, Fargo CA's, and...

Re: Lutzow vs. US heavy cruiser
The American ship does have one advantage... due to their fairly high rate of fire they could shoot off many more rounds per minute than the two of the Deuschland Class. The Baltimore class for instance, could fire off 4,000lbs more ammo in one minute than the Lutzow. Baltimore: 3,015lbs(Broadside) ...

Re: Top ten most powerful navies in the world
If you have a navy and phassed array coverage then having a long coastline should not be a problem, for when their sensors go off screaming you should have enough time to send your fleet out and intercept them.

Re: Brooklyn V Mogami
Why cant I edit my last post? Was that privelage taken away at some point? I realized that before 1940 the class was taken into the yards, replacing the five 6in turrets to five 8in turrets... so the data from my previous post is accurate, for by the time that all four of the ships were converted wi...

Re: Brooklyn V Mogami
USS Brooklyn: Armament: 15 x 6in Broadside: 1,950lbs RoF: 8 rounds per minute lbs per minute: 15,600lbs IJN Mogami: Armament: 10 x 8in Broadside: 2,770lbs RoF: 4 per minute lbs per minute: 11,080lbs It clearly shows that while the Mogami would have a better amount of punch, Brooklyn has a faster Ro...
