Re: Yamato: the greatest warship of all times

Ken Thompson wrote:In the battle off Samar when the Japanese fleet turned around one of the gunners on a CVE is reported to have said: "Hey they're getting away".
I also liked "We're suckering em into 40mm range"!

Re: Yamato: the greatest warship of all times

I'm reminded of the 'three most important points of real estate'; location, location, location. Or in countless football matches where both sides are evenly matched, the reason the guy with the ball gets through is because all the giant full backs and other are 'out of position'. To deceive the ene...

Re: The Dutch Navy's Challenge

Sorry. I can be a smartie! As to the scenario I'm thinking that if the Dutch had gotten the battlecruisers they wanted, things might have been a little different in early 42......maybe. BIG maybe there. The Japanese werent slouches, and if the Dutch had a capital ship in the East Indies I'm sure the...

Re: Best cruisers of WWII and the best use of cruisers

From what I'v read, the germ of the idea for the Alaska class cruisers started with the "Panzerschiffs" and a percieved need to counter them and then was fed by the rumors of large Japanese "super cruisers" abuilding. I understand that at one point there was serious pressure to c...

Re: Best cruisers of WWII and the best use of cruisers

You can call them whatever suits you, but the fact remains that the people that built them and operated them considered them to be cruisers. And for "dismal failers" they were quite well thought of in the US Navy, especialy in the carrier escort role. I understand their biggest fault was a...

Re: Hood gets a proper refit - now what?

Converting Hood to an aircraft carrier while still under construction would have been interesting.

What are the opinions of the Italian Navy's rebuilding of 4 ww1 era BBs? Worthwhile? A waste of resources? Were these four ships effective units?

Re: Japan Options for WWII

I completly agree with! However, that doesnt lessen the basic "unfairness" (for want of a better word) of policies. It being a case of: We have descided to stop doing what we were doing and you have to follow our rules now, not our example.

Re: Japan Options for WWII

It does kinda seem that the West acted somewhat hypocriticaly towards Japan............IMHO it doesnt seem that the Japanese werent doing anything that the West hadnt done.

I am kind of curious and I was wondering if some of the British here could answer.........HAD Jutland turned out as a smashing British victory, what sort of awards/honors would have been bestowed on Jellicoe?

Re: The sinking of the Konigsberg

So? Its not much of a point at all. Study up on the times.......there are so many factors there that the point you are making is really moot. I think timing is actually the point and I think you will find operational service is what counts, you can criticise the the FAA for its size and the vintage...
