Re: Denmark Strait and RN Articles of War
Hello everybody, The timing is a known parameter well proven by written evidences and maps signed by the Officers that were there, including Capt. Leach himself as you have read above. I don't consider myself a "wolf", but I have seen so much SIGNED, WRITTEN evidence and statements from S...

Re: Denmark Strait and RN Articles of War
Hi, Antonio; Just in case you may believe I am one who refuses to answer your previous question re: 06:0_(?) vs. 06:13, note that I have little doubt that 06:13 is the wrong timing for PoW's turnaway. I think however, that 06:01:30 is a little TOO precise, even with the evidence, and I still conside...

Re: Denmark Strait and RN Articles of War
@Antonio: What is the purpose of your two scenarios? Are you attempting to establish an opinion on whether or not, Leach DECIDED to continue the action? If so, then the TIMING is not germane, and to DELIBERATELY include the 06:13 time point in your scenario #1 is what I like to call "entrapment...

Re: USS South Dakota at Guadalcanal
Kind of disproves the idea that the crews need to be well worked up to perform well. I might not go quite that far, Dave... disproval requires proof of at least equal strength and veracity. There is a possible suggestion to that end, but the sheer number of actual firings has little to do with work...

Re: Denmark Strait and RN Articles of War
Purely hindsight, But after Hood's loss and the (for whatever reason) POW's disengagement, a BB added to the shadowing force seems like a splendid idea. One CA shadowing Bismarck while the other shadows PE could very easily quickly end in contact lost (or shadower lost). Tom BB ? CA ? Oh, y...

Re: Denmark Strait : the airplanes !
I have lost the general course of this rather intense discussion as of late last year. When all the points, counterpoints, hypotheses and challenges are fed into and "crunched" by the "what really happened" machine, what will we finally have? Will it all be something like a compl...

Re: How did you come to be interested in Bismarck?
Cameron didn't find a "Bismark", except possibly a cream-filled pastry by that name in his research ship's pantry.
He did manage to locate the Bismarck, a famous German battleship wreck.

Re: Bismarck - Pride of the German Navy
My apology for having made you explain it needlessly, Antonio. Due to a technical issue, I could not see the entire image field in left-to-right view. Problem now solved, everything makes sense, and yes--Paul did a very good job when he created his enhanced MSP graphic many months ago. This particul...

I believe I pointed out the scale issue, some weeks ago. Wasn't this addressed in the re-drawn diagram?

Re: Denmark Strait and RN Articles of War
Most likely because it was about 65% of the maximum ballistic range (of the 15" too if the elevation could be greater) or approaching the threshold where it changes from not as likely to score hits to much more likely to score hits. Remember the British doctrine at that time was to close range...

Re: Force Z
The matter was more than a mere mistake; MUCH more, in my opinion. I can highly recommend two fine volumes (they should be available through libraries). For historical context and "setting the stage": Bloody Shambles: Volume 1 {Shores/Cull/Izawa} For evidence that it went beyond a mere mis...

Re: Your favourite Battleship
If battleCRUISERS are eligible here, I am compelled to vote for HMS Repulse. A beautiful ship, not the strongest fighter but sleek, speedy and very pleasing to the eye.
If battlecruisers are "out", then I probably lean toward HMS Valiant.
