Re: Bismarck firing procedures at DS

Alberto One last question: are Germans ALWAYS firing together the guns in a single turret or are you aware of special circumstances when only 1 gun in a turret can be ordered to fire ? Thanks in advance for your help here..... Bye, Alberto Generally speaking, the two guns in a turret would be fired ...

Re: Bismarck firing procedures at DS

@Alecsandros: I agree with Antonio that the 93 shells expended is probably the correct figure; afterall, it comes from Luetjens' situation report and he uses "nur" to emphasize the unexpectedly small exenditure of main battery ammunition. I think initially Bismarck adopted a fairly steady ...

Re: Bismarck firing procedures at DS

Hi Alberto, There were several methods of directing and firing the guns which could be used aboard Bismarck. One was to fire from the central fire control Rechenstelle by means of the main gyro and artificial horizon. In this method, the directors acted like the director pointers of WW 1 German ship...

Re: Hood Gunnery on May 24

For those who may not have seen it. I would recommend enlarging it slightly to give a better view, but this is how Prinz Eugen and Bismarck would have appeared to observers in Hood at about the time Holland gave the order to open fire. http://i63.photobucket.com/albums/h130/thomas_fuller/firstview_z...

Re: Deck guns to sink submarines

I should think, at the close ranges necessary for a surface ship to spot and engage such a small target as a submarine, the guns would be close to maximum depression for a battleship or cruiser, and in any event the shells would arrive at such a shallow angle of fall, that they would be more likely ...

Re: Tirpitz sails on part of Rheinubung

normally, the first full salvo was a deflection shoot since with cold barrels, the shells were not expected to fall at the calculated range. Deflection, however could be corrected by observing fall of shot. The subsequent ranging salvos were expected to fall at the proper distances they were set for.

Re: 38 cm and 15 cm sound

German RP 38 propellant was double based, as Phil says, but whereas nitroglycerine and nitro-cellulose formed the double base, the Germans substituted DNG (diethylene glycol dinitrate) which lowered the burning temperature and reduced bore erosion. The trade off was this produced considerably more s...

Re: 38 cm and 15 cm sound

In the case of the 38cm, sound should be a bit sharper tone as the gun was higher velocity; same with the 15cm naval gun versus the 15cm howitzer. Perhaps the 12,8cm Pak 44 might be closer in sound.

Re: JAPANESE NAVAL HELMETS

The standard naval helmet was the type92 steel 'tetsubo'. This was the same helmet used by the army and differed mainly in having an anchor device on the front instead of the army star.

Re: 38 cm and 15 cm sound

And even for those set ups that did have a microphone, microphones of the time were not capable of capturing all the different wavelengths of sound when a big gun fired, so it was more common to dub something approximating the sound of a muzzle blast during post production.

Re: We are developers of a new naval sim and we need some help

This sheltered space in the tower mast did provide some splinter protection and protection from the weather in cruisers and battleships that did not have the enclosed admiral's bridge gallery. It was equipped with communications (phones, etc), gyro compass repeater, and possibly course and speed rep...

Re: We are developers of a new naval sim and we need some help

Access was, as you speculate, by means of an internal set of stairs (companion ways). The admiral had a sea cabin at the base of the tower mast, as did the captain. Most officers had cabins near their primary watch stations.

Hallo Hans!

I normally just copy the image link from Photobucket and paste it direct into the text of my messages here without adding any brackets. The Image link already has them.
