Re: should have the prinz eugen stayed with the bismarck ?
Then the improving weather can not be considered in tactical sense as while in contact with the enemy no refueling would possible an I believe the PG's fuel situation would have been in a critical state by the 27 th.?

Re: Bismarck's engine spaces
After further investigation I believe this is another case of 'selective' quotation of facts. The 17,000 shp figure is reflective of a overload power settings for the kgv, while the 13,000 figure is reflective of the standard power setting for the Bismarck. A more accurate comparison would be to quo...

Re: Bismarck's engine spaces
From this web site dry weight is 47.5 tons wet weight is 52.8 tons. What was the weight of the kgv boiler again? READ my last post very carefully. Shp production is via the turbines ability to change the force of the steam hitting the blades into a rotational moment / effect. Boiler efficiency is ho...

Re: Bismarck's engine spaces
I thinkyou are reading too much into a probable 800kg weight difference. As far as a measure of efficiency of a boiler is measured, a boiler of small size that physical weighs the same as a supposed larger type suggest more internal heating surface for a given area. Therefore a boiler that is smalle...

Re: should have the prinz eugen stayed with the bismarck ?
True Paul true, but what about the question of improved visibility in such an advent. Is the advantage of radar that exists in bad weather the same when the weather clears?

Re: War time drydock construction in Germany
As I have both family records from this time from letters to my great great grandfather, from siblings living in various provinces in Germany addressed to him here in Australia that address this issue from within the party and thoses opposed to it, plus a personal friendship with a lower ranked SS w...

Re: Bismarck and her contemporaries
There is a very good explaination as to the accuracy of the American products. His program is directly linked to the methods used in USA when working out the orginal charts. The +- 12% error in other types is exactly as I expected due to the relative guess work about foreign armour in the 1940's and...

Re: Bismarck's engine spaces
Some clarification please about problems listed 1./ Is there not some sort of braking method used in either system? I think in either case there would have to be a transition stage as you could not just apply full reverse power and expect the everything to instantly be going in the other direction. ...

Re: War time drydock construction in Germany
Further to the part about the female work force of war time Germany. They never systematically used or thought to use the female population in that way. It was considered that the role of been a mother ( breeding the next generation of prefect German Aryans if you want to be blunt about it) was main...

Re: Bismarck and her contemporaries
The only problem I have with the program I have seen for homogeneous armour by Nathan Okun is it lack of armour choice and shell type, both of which seem to me to be restricted to one type each more along the lines of the international standard for testing steel strength, than any real world compari...

Re: Bismarck's engine spaces
I believe the more accurate reasoning for the size of the boilers lies in their original designed purpose. It has been suggested that the orginal units were designed to fit in destoryers and the units used in the BS were beefed up versions. For their size their heat transfer rating is MORE efficient...

Re: Bismarck and her contemporaries
As facehard program is briefly mentioned. Although it is designed to simulate face hardened armour penetration, I find ,if you know what the backing material properties are you can come up with homogenous armour performance by removing the hardened % settings in the program. I got some results that ...

Re: Bismarck and her contemporaries
That is what so interesting about this subject in general. No matter how much study you put into it, how sound you are with your own conclusions, somebody can come up with a point that is so B.B.O. ( blindingly bloody obvious ) that you think to yourself one "why did I not see that? " and ...

Re: should have the prinz eugen stayed with the bismarck ?
Question. If indeed the turn to the north into the 24 hour day light and the good visibility had occurred, Would not have effective visual combat ranges also increase to equal radar contact ranges? As to trying to hide from the British cruisers, why would he have bothered to try? Lutjen had already ...

Re: Bismarck and her contemporaries
So the data on armour performance has been standardized before been applied to the penetration curves using modern knowledge of historical armour performance and not the assumed knowledge of the orginal doclument ? If so I withdraw my previous statement completely as been a incorrect assumption on m...
