But it didn't explode (or so I believe), hence the captain survived. So POW was saved by this fact... Patrick, are you postulating that Captain Leach was the only remaining officer capable of commanding PoW, and because of that, she was spared? I think what is mean't here is that if Leach h...

Would PE actually have been safer hiding behind Bismarck? In fact she would have been more in the line of fire, as both British ships would have to fire on Bismarck because that ship would be the only target in British sights. I imagine that had PE been withdrawn from the line of battle, she would ...

Prinz Eugen's Performance at DS Battle

Hi All, On another, less dedicated, website I was criticised for writing that "PE fought magnificently alongside Bismarck on 24 May 1941". It was the use of "magnificently" that someone objected to. He felt that PE had been in no great danger that day and contradicted my assertio...

One thing though: Was 7 knots the best that Bismarck could do or was a desicion to maintain that speed? Hi Karl, I seem to recall from the Baron's book that the speed of 7 knots was chosen, after it became clear that the ship was unmanoeuvrable, to offset the effect of the fairly heavy sea and to e...

Ok, time to drag some under-educated, ill-informed, 20/20 hindsight illogic into a well versed debate. Why on earth would a halfway prudent navy, such as the KM, not train for a worst case situation? Hi Steve, What happened to Bismarck on 26 May 1941, i.e. having her steering jammed by a torpedo wa...

Hi Antonio (nice post ) and everyone, Mmmm. Still hard to believe that a weapon platform like the Bismarck could be so lethal against Hood and PoW and just a few days later a totally ineffective combatant. Regards Steve Yes, Steve, it's very hard to believe. Still, common sense dictates that ...

Re: The destroyer attack to Bismarck

Ciao Antonio,

This is very interesting.

I have the 'gist' (i.e. the thrust or general points) of what's written in the notes but can any of our German or German-speaking friends provide a translation of the notes for us?

Regards,

Patrick

Re: Bismarck movie for Silent Hunter III

Hello everyone, Take your time to download and see this 8-minute Silent Hunter III movie about Operation Rheinübung. The zip file is large (111.36 MB) but worth the time waiting for the download. Have fun! José Hi Jose, I'd love to download that zip file but, even on a LAN, 111 MB is just too big t...

Antonio, Can anything about the gap to Bismarck be devined by the length of Prinz Eugen's stern wake? In the largest version of the picture, Bismarck appears to be 'not far' behind the point where the wake comes to an end; but of course that might be misleading as that point is very much in the back...

Reverse into Bay of Biscay?

Hi All, My apologies if this is an old thread but I don't see reference to it on the site. In discussion of courses of action open to Capt. Lindemann after Bismarck's rudder became irretrievably jammed on 26 May 1941, I seem to recall a Kriegsmarine officer asking why they didn't think of reversing ...

Re: Goodbye Iowa and Wisconsin

Hi, I suppose the greatest concern to BB enthusiasts would be the preservation of these great ships, either as floating museums or in active service. While the latter option should undoubtedly convince sceptics of their value for money and firepower, there would certainly be those who would point to...

Hi Marty,

I see that you have "reversed" a photo in support of your case...

Is this a (rare..) example of reversible photos that no one on this forum disagrees with?

!!

Hi Antonio, I see now that you were referring to the three photos you mentioned above! Ok, leavng aside no. 2, which you say is not great quality, nos 1 and 3 appear to strengthen your case, assuming I have pictured them correctly in my mind. Re: Denmark Strait new photos

Ciao Patrick and all, few comments from my side. Can you comment also the other 3 photos........ Hi Antonio, As you'll have seen, my intention in these last two posts was not to cast aspersion on anyone's views of the battle sequence. I was adding my tuppence worth on the "new" picture an...

Further to my last posting, I have found some evidence that "appears" to show that the picture of Bismarck was taken from the port bow of Prinz Eugen . I choose my words carefully! Between 7.14 and 7.29 of the Denmark Strait film footage, the bow of the PE is shown and the sea on the port ...
