Re: Washington Treaty & its effects

Like RF wrote, non-WT signataries could give a good exemple of what non-WT cruisers would look like, but even the Panzerschiffen were designed with the WT's limitations in mind. And Welcome to the Boards! The Panzerschiffe were not WT ships, they were Versailles peace treaty vessels. Germany was no...

Re: Franco-Italian Naval War, 1940-41

german reports about the battles in the mediteranean sea in 1941 mentions that italian claims on enemy shipping sunk were always wrong, as the "italians count every splash by dolphine jumping as a enemy ship sunk". So italian reports were mostly useless in a realistic assessment of the act...

Re: American battleship guns

due to the flatter trajectory and higher velocity the inner zone of immunity (Belt penetration is pushed out by approximately 4500 yards for the same vertical target thickness. The same reason (flatter trajectory) results in a lower impact angle at deck targets at the same distance, so the outer zon...

Re: Would Yamato with advanced AA gunnery survive air attack

Some tought from my side. Carriers were able to perform usually a comparatively massed first strike and this first strike could be more concentrated on key targets at longer distances. The outcome of modern warfare strongly depends on first recognized - maneuver - first shot - first hit. But they we...

Re: Would Yamato with advanced AA gunnery survive air attack

one tought Attacking Battleships with standard bombs makes almost no sense as they make mostly superficial damage to the upperworks. US ships usually operate in big task forces with a massive screen of CA/CL and DD. Additional they had a CAP above their heads. only torpedoes and AP bombs with suffic...

Re: Would Yamato with advanced AA gunnery survive air attack

Ther is a USN report available, that the 5"/38 gave (non) satisfactory(or somwhat simililar meaning) results at target distances up to 13,000 ft(4,500m). The tone was somwhat less enthusiastic as usual. I'll look for that piece. http://www.history.navy.mil/library/online/suicide_attacks.htm#def...
