Re: Best war movie ever?
Have you read 'The Washing of the Spears'? Great book--packed full of detail and excellent character sketches of some of the amazing men involved in the war. I agree, the 'prequel' was also quite good, if a bit hard on the British commander, played by Peter O' Toole. I doubt he was quite such an a**...

Re: Bismarcks armour
But alas, still not unsinkable. Bismarck indeed was a marvelous work of design and engineering - but was still lost as a result of one small torpedo, dropped by an obsolete biplane, striking a vital area, and no means of countering the crippling damage caused. It's impossible not to think of the de...

Re: Best war movie ever?
Wow I am sure I have looked at this thread a few times in my 8 or more years membership--but why is it that no one has brought up one of the greatest war movies of all time, 'Zulu!' ? Despite a number of gross inaccuracies, it remains an excellent depiction of one of the most glorious 'Last Stands' ...

Re: Bismarcks armour
There you have it. I am inclined to believe the Baron's account--that the engines were still running and the ship was basically intact as far as the internal works were concerned, until he was scuttled--other that the armament and the upper works of course. No doubt he would have sunk eventually, bu...

Re: Taranto Effect on Naval Warfare
However, 85-100 elite torpedo planes... it's a bit to much for the AA defense of either task force, IMO. IF , on the other hand, we would have South Dakota AND NOrth Carolina (both with late-1942 armament) along with, say, 4 US modern CAs and 10 modern DDs... I would put my money on the battleships...

Re: Admiral (2008) Russian film
OK sorry about that wiki link, for some reason the ")" at the end isn't part of the link in the post (even though it looks like it). If you add that ")" to the end in your address bar, it should work. About the officers in that first battle scene (in the YouTube link), yes they l...

Re: Taranto Effect on Naval Warfare
In each case they were operating as part of an intergated task group in a AA formation, and with a AA cruiser close by. It was not a case of the ships fending off these attacks essentially alone. Gatch's claims of SD shooting down dozens of enemy AC still rankles the crew members of the other ships...

Admiral (2008) Russian film
Just watched this movie about the Russian Admiral Kolchak: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Admiral_(film) It's got a great scene in the beginning where a German 'armored cruiser' (as described in the article, but it looks more like a battlecruiser) is led over a freshly laid minefield by Kolchak in an ...

Re: Taranto.
I would welcome the informed view of poswters on this site as to my conviction that Taranto not only represents the best of the RN but also had an enormous effect on naval warfare. It is rather irritating to see Pearl Harbor repeatedly touted as being this dramatic, sudden, shocking proof that batt...

Re: Bismarck Wreck Salvage
True, you can't skimp on starship ''warpdrive'' but it would be likely by then that the skills in boiler making would have been lost for ever. Some of the heritage steam railways in Britain are now starting to encounter problems in keeping a pool of trained skilled labour in boiler making and steam...

Re: Bismarck Wreck Salvage
The only remaining difficulty (in the short term) then will be one of finance, particulary against the background of economic recession and the new financial austerity following on from the problems with the banking system liquidity and of course the costs of supporting the Euro. If we are looking ...

Re: Bismarck Wreck Salvage
They could use some sort of substitute for the thick armor plate, of course--but the cost would still be phenomenal. Still cheaper than attempting to raise and restore the original, I bet. Still, I wouldn't rule out the possibility for the future, either way--more likely the construction of a replic...

Re: Bismarck proper name "He" or "She"
I'm with Lindemann. These magnificent ships had no vaginas, nor had they balls--except maybe metaphorically. If he wanted to call a magnificent fighting machine such as this Bismarck 'he', I'm very happy to oblige him. And have done so as long as I've been posting here.

Re: Preston: Worst warships of all time
Wow didn't know that about Vanguard (necessity for counterflooding when firing main armament). I've never been impressed with Vanguard anyway, neither in terms of looks nor in terms of offensive armament. The WW I era 15" was a very fine gun to be sure, but by late WW II there were much better ...
