May 23: the great adventure was about to start in the Denmarck Straits.

Ciao all,
YES, first shots at HMS Norfolk and both forward Bismarck radars went out of action, .. making Bismarck radar blind ahead, .......
.... this would have a very important impact on what was going to happen overnight, ..... and the morning after,......
Bye Antonio

In order to honor a soldier, we have to tell the truth about what happened over there. The whole, hard, cold truth. And until we do that, we dishonor her and every soldier who died, who gave their life for their country. ( Courage Under Fire )

I find it amazing that members from Italy, Costa Rica and Rumania are on-the-ball!
The Royal Navy's Fleet Air Arm was a major player, but sadly the Annversary is only being celebrated at the Royal Naval Air Station in Cornwall.
I was privilege to meet the Swordfish pilot that disabled the Bismarck, John (Jock) Moffat -still going strong, see attachment.

Excelent! Considering that happened so long ago. When I was a boy it was something that happened not even thirty years ago. Now is going for the century.
I imagine is getting near the hour of the combat nearby Iceland. Here in Barranquilla Colombia is 8 pm. By now Holland was making all those manouvers and decisions. Awesome!

... And by now, Hood was destroyed and PoW damaged. Suffolk, Norfolk and PoW were slowly trying to chase the Germans. A few hours later they would make a very long-range battle

Remembering Hood then and now.... So breathtakingly beautiful, yet an object of war that died doing what she was meant to do...engaging an enemy at sea.
Remembering the 1,428 men that died this morning 70 years ago aboard Hood and Prince of Wales, and those who survived. And Bismarck & Prinz Eugen and their crews - for achieving the most stunning and unexpected victory their navy could have imagined!
Here's my 70th Anniversary tribute:

Moffat was also in the air during the final battle with the Bismarck in the morning of 27 May. He later saw hundreds of German sailors in the sea struggling for their lives.SWORDFISH wrote:I was privilege to meet the Swordfish pilot that disabled the Bismarck, John (Jock) Moffat -still going strong, see attachment.
Nice to see he is doing well. He must be on his 90s, right?
Re: 70th Anniversary, sinking of the Bismarck
Indeed. I haven't looked closely at dioramas in a while but this goes well beyond what I have seen. I'm not even sure how much of it was done. Very Very impressive.José M. Rico wrote:Paul, that diorama of Hood under fire is great !!!

Re: 70th Anniversary, sinking of the Bismarck
Thanks guys! You're all too kind.
This is my old 1/700 Tamiya model pulled out of mothballs (having subsequently built the Trumpeter version) and fixed up for this purpose- so the detail on the kit itself is not really great, but I tried to get the setting of the diorama as right as possible. I estimated the angle on the guns and directors to represent just opened A-arcs pointing at Prinz Eugen. You may not be able to see it but the spotting top is shot through with the small splash to port representing the unexploded shell. An imaginary line from that splash through the spotting top location would then go in the direction of Bismarck.
The model is painted in White Ensign Models' AP507B - this ship's actual colour at the time of her loss.
The sea, splashes and flames are white acrylic/silicone caulking - painted Model Masters dark sea blue glossy for the sea, and a mix of yellow and red covered in varnish for the flames. the smoke is obviously cotton sprayed with textured grey-black spray paint.
You can see more pictures from different angles here:

Re: 70th Anniversary, sinking of the Bismarck
The BBC website has an interview with Jock Moffat, the RAF pilot credited with launching the torpedo that was fatal for Bismarck.

On this day, the 70th anniversary of the sinking of this wonderful ship, let us remember all who died and those who perished three days earlier.
