Hit on Bismarck's barbett

Post by paul.mercer »

Gentlemen,
During the final battle it was stated that a 'spectacular' hit was observed in the region of the fore part of Bismarck, probably from one of Rodneys 16".
When Robert ballard discovered the wreck he filmed a hit on the barbett of (I think) Bruno turret, In your opinions, could this hit have penetrated the trunking used to bring up the shells and cordite and set one or both off causing this apparently very visable hit?

Probably not, as it poses a further question of flashback and magazine detonation.

More likely the prominence of the shell exploding was down to the relative poor light background and the unobstructed view of the explosion from that horizontal angle.
