Hello everybody,
deos anybody have an idea on how was the procedure to launch the Arado 196 from the Bismarck catapult either side clearing the crane that was an obvious problem on the runaway when the Arado 196 had her wings opened ?
Happy discussion ..... :-)

In order to honor a soldier, we have to tell the truth about what happened over there. The whole, hard, cold truth. And until we do that, we dishonor her and every soldier who died, who gave their life for their country. ( Courage Under Fire )

There was a starting position of the crane. The small telescopic lever was retracted and the cables were pressed down.

Re: Bismarck Arado 196 launching procedures
Of course the Tirpitz didn't have this problem due to the different location of her cranes.
Re: Bismarck Arado 196 launching procedures
Was that in the light of experience with launching Bismarcks' Arados? Or was that for other reasons?

Re: Bismarck Arado 196 launching procedures
Aside from aircraft handling, experience with Bismarck showed that the crane interferred with the fields of fire of several AA guns, a potentially more serious problem than complicating the handling and launching of aircraft. Repositioning the cranes on Tirpitz and moving the the second 10,5cm Flak on each side to a more outboard position solved the field of fire problem. Bismarck, had she survived her first sortie, would almost certainly have had the same modification as Tirpitz received.

They stood and Earth's foundations stay;
What God abandoned these defended;
And saved the sum of things for pay.
