Bismarck. 1815-1898

We tend to forget the man himself and in whose honour this ship was named.

But not only this ship, but others, towns, places and the like.
There appear to be hundreds of Bismarcks, past and current, Worldwide.
Maybe our members could contribute some, family connections, a street, bridge or a hotel maybe.
Do you know something the wider audience may not.

With this there is also the irony that Otto von Bismarck was entirely opposed to Germany developing a large navy and the very concept on which the battleship named after him was built.....

Announcement made that the 9th and penultimate US JHSV will be named

USNS Bismarck JHSV-9

Build awarded to Austal USA, Mobile, Alabama.
Original contract awarded 24th Feb 2012.
Original intended name Sacrifice, prior to transfer from army to navy.

Bismarck is the capital city of North Dakota, as such since 1889,
founded in 1872, not as Bismarck, population approx 65,000.

She will be the first US naval vessel to honour (honor) the city.
