Thanks for yet another interesting post. It's often said it takes torpedoes to sink a ship, but six underwater 16" hits would hurt a lot. I lack detailed layouts of the Japanese BC armor, but it all makes sense.

The general layout of the Kongo class armor resembled that of the Bismarck, differing mostly in thickness and quality. Bismarck used full armor-grade deck protection, while the Kongos retained a good amount of HT deck plating. As would be the case with Bismarck, Kongo's side armor would be effectively immune to 5in shells from the bottom of the main belt all the way up to the weather deck.
