Enquiry over Short Sunderland photos

Post by alecsandros »

Hello ,

Today I took another read at
http://www.hmshood.org.uk/reference/off ... 15-415.htm

Which has the report made by the Short Sunderland flying boat that observed the Battle for Denmark Strait.

The document has in it's header the phrase "25/5/6 from Hqrs R.A.F. Iceland - enclosing photographs taken by Z/201 while locating enemy naval forces".

Does anyone know what this refers to ? Did the Short Sunderland make pictures of the battle ? Can they be available to the public ?

Best,

Thank you,
So the reference to "enclosing photos" doesn't have photos in it ?

Ok...
You know, I wonder... could it be .. could it be.. that there ARE other photos/films that we do not know about... taken during the battle... ?
For instance, Prinz Eugen's film... Is clearly done for propaganda reasons. It shows Bismarck firing away main and secondary salvos toward the enemy, which barely replies ... I believe the film was much longer... and probably captured other aspects of the battle as well.. such as Bismarck straddled by Prince of Wales... maybe the giant fountains of water errupting in front of Prinz Eugen and drenching her decks awash... But that wouldn't fit in a propaganda movie...

Some day... Who knows...

Also, weren't there any photos taken from Prince of Wales at all ?

Hello everybody,

not to put other doubts around, ... since we have already too many ... remember that there were photographer on board HMS Prince of Wales, ... and on board HMS Suffolk ( Coote, R G G (Lt) ).

Royal Navy official photographer : Coote, R G G (Lt) (Photographer)

http://www.iwm.org.uk/collections/searc ... %29&query=

I had a chance to see and explain a photo while on Portsmouth on 2010, ... taken by HMS Norfolk on the late afternoon of May 24th, 1941 showing the second action of HMS Prince of Wales.

The photo is published on Iain Ballantyne book :
