BIG SHIP

Post by Ulrich Rudofsky »

At 450,000 GT this is a big ship, but does it make sense to build something like that?

Big indeed:

Displacement: 450,000GT
Lenght: 505m
Breadth: 58m
Decks: 20

Trial speed is 22kn,

Hey, USS Enterprise is 342 meters long and the newer Nimitz Class USS Eisenhower is 333 meters long. So, this "beast" is 163 meters longer, or in other terms more or less the Graf Spee...

Wow! Impressive, and quite a feat of maritime engineering.

However, I would think this ship will be about as successful in its mission as Yamato was on hers.

As a confirmed cruise ship addict, I have no desire at all to be on something this massive and crowded. Many of the world's really neat cruise destinations (example - Amalfi) have no ability whatsoever to receive a ship this big. I far prefer the mid-size cruise ships, like the three R-Class ships sailed today by Oceania (m/s Regatta, Insignia, Nautica), our favorites by far.

Just my opinion.

Sort of like the new Super-Airbus....no place to land or park and hours to get your baggage and go through customs.......

PS: Speaking of the REGATTA, take a look at the little Regatta 1:1250 model my friend John Eagan makes http://www.collectableships.com/models/ ... egatta.jpg ....... and our friend George Elder distributes it as well as the Bismarck and the entire Kriegsmarine etc. Take a look. I have 2000 of these little gems in my collection, and now I even build my own....... http://ship1250photo.com/index.php

Ulrich - Terrific! Thanks.

You should do models of Insignia and Nautica to go along with the Regatta! Hint - they are identical, except for the names on the hull at the bow and stern, the fish sculptures above the pool, the names of the lounges, and the art hanging on the walls.

Great ships. Very enjoyable, very relaxing.

I think John Eagan made all 4 R liners in 1:1250. I know he has planned to do that. Presently there are the R2 (Renaissance Line), Regatta, and Tahitian Princess which George Elder has in stock.

 http://www.navis-neptun.de/produkte/dat ... 24n_e.html Rudi and Egbert Kraus (Navis/Neptun) make the entire German Navies 1900-1945! All in 1:1250 which doesn't take a lot of room.

Ulrich -

All eight of the Renaissance "R-ships" are happily back in active service with US cruise lines now:

R-One is Oceania's m/s Insignia
R-Two is Oceania's m/s Regatta
R-Three is Princess' Pacific Princess (#2, not the ship in TV's "Love Boat")
R-Four is Princess' Tahitian Princess
R-Five is Oceania's m/s Nautica
R-Six is RCL's Celebrity Journey (now branded as Azamara)
R-Seven is RCL's Celebrity Quest
R-Eight is Princess' Royal Princess
