Debris Field (merchant shipmodelling site) is closing down

Hello all ~ I’m not quite sure if there are members of the Debris Dield around here, a shipmodel building site dedicated to merchant ships since 1999, but just in case you missed the information that the Debris Field is closing down, a temporarily shelter for the members is provided from the webmaster of “Marinewerft”, a German shipmodel building forum. The language shouldn’t be a problem as many of the members of “Marinewerft” understand English.

Please see this post as a notification as many DF-members might be unaware of the fact that their portal is closing down in two days time. Here’s the link to the webmaster’s announcement:

I have some - unfortunate - news I wanted to share with you all. I want to ask if anyone would be interested in rehoming the DF (site and forum). I would be able to send the site, on CD-ROM to anyone who could reinstate it at some point

The reasons are two, both financial I'm afraid. I'm sure you can understand, but like many people in this country, and indeed world-over, I'm starting to feel the bite of the so-called 'credit crunch'. The main problem is that the server I use has so far been paid for with a one-off yearly fee. For reasons unknown (presumably to counter the down-turn in sales), they're now switching to monthly subscriptions. This is geared towards providing better value for corporate users, so in effect, the cost of maintaining the DF online would be quadrupled. I just cannot justify this any more.

The second reason is that for the next few months at least, I'm not going to have regular access to the net. While I sort some other things out, I'm probably only going to have minimal access, probably not through my own account for a while. This means that when the regular security upgrades need to be applied (and I can't not do them, otherwise the server co will suspend the site), I'd have to pay someone else at tech support to do it.

I am sorry to have to be the bearer of bad news, but in this case it is unavoidable. The date for the site going offline will be Saturday 18th October.

There is no need to register to post messages or to post hyperlinks to images of your models at Marinewerft.de. The only thing is that you need to fill in the “Bestätigungs-Code” (Confirmation Code) at the bottom of the page when posting. The code is a random choice of letters and numbers and it doesn’t make a difference if you use capitals or not. To avoid confusion with the capital “O”, the “null/zero” is written with a forward slash inside. As we are guests there, at least a name of who is posting should be provided.

Usage of the site shouldn’t be a problem, the symbols are all the same you are all familiar with – it’s only in German. If there are any questions regarding the usage, feel free and ask me - I'm an able translator.

I named the header of this part of the forum “From Deck to Truck”, which is said when a ship is dressed with flags, think about Titanic on Good Friday in Southampton. I hope it reflects a kind of a new beginning, even if temporarily, and it hosts the sub-section “The shelter for the DEBRIS FIELD COMMUNITY”. Of course, the rest of the forum is also available but for a few sections, registering as a member is required (“Recherche => Research”). The same applies to make use of the PM (Private Message) service.

I think this is a good way to stay in touch until a new site can be established, no matter if it will be called “Debris Field” or not.

I hope I didn’t break any rules here, normally I don’t advertise other message boards in a forum but I hope you understand that I want to keep as much of the old members of the Debris Field together until it will have its own site in the future again.

Thanks for your effort, however, if I'm not mistaken, someone stepped up who could host the site but it will take a while before every detail is sorted out. Maybe my efforts finding a temporarily shelter were completely in vain...
