Are there car fans here? F1? Le Mans? Porsche? Aston Martin? Ferrari? (No frenchies, please) Corvette Stingray? GTO? Has someone something against the objective statement that Porsche built the best cars in the whole world?

I've always had a soft spot for amphibious cars, although there isn't much need for one round where I live - the middle of England.

On the subject of Spyder, the Italian car maker Maserati had a model called Spyder I recall back in the 1980's and early 1990's. We had a garage franchise selling them just down the road from where I live. It went bust - well just look at the Maserati catalogue prices..... I believe that garage managed to sell just one Spyder.....

I noticed an item in my local newspaper last night.

It said that a new version of the Trabant is to come out into production. Same shape of body, but an electric battery engine.

Any takers?

I have a classic Porsche 944. My idea for next year is to buy me 1985 Carrera RS.

You'll need to keep on winning the lottery - in my experience as an accountant, those clients with Porsches have huge insurance premiums and even a routine service can land you with a four figure bill. And don't even think about having an accident in one.

A friend of mine just bought a 911 Carrera, brand new (well, last year) and he haven't complain on any extrarodinary expenditure. But I do agree that giving maintenance to those "boys" must be expensive. They are not a Chevy or a Nissan for sure: they are state of the art stuff, like Aston Martin or Ferrari.

I was discussing Porshe driving experiences with somebody a few weeks ago and he told me some interesting experiences he had while serving in West Germany prior to the wall coming down. Some of you may find this entertaining. He told me that one could rent a Porshe Turbo 911 or a 956 for as little as $25 US back them and take them out on autobans.

Sometimes when they had to go into west Berlin they would take a Porshe Turbo or a BMW M instead of a military truck to just aggravate the socialist/communists with their terrible Trabants and other standard of living symbols of uniformity.

Coming into or out of the corridor, the speed limit was supposed to be something like 80 km/h which they would purposely flaunt. They would just go as fast as they wanted. The East German and Russian authorities couldn't do anything to them. They were instructed if stopped by East Germans to just roll up the windows, and flash their ID cards to them, and to not say a word. They would just blow by at about 200km/h past the East German police in their Trabants when they would hold up their red lollipops as a signal to pull over. The check points however were manned by Russian troops and they would time how long it took to go between check points, so every so far they would stop and wait for the East German Trabants to catch up, and just as the Trabant was approaching they would take off again in a cloud of tire smoke. The Trabants of course were emitting a different kind of smoke.

At each check point often a very angry Russian soldier would scream in broken English: "(messing) with the police again are we?! You must not do this! Now get out of here!" Sometimes they would get one with a better sense of humor and he would just be rolling with laughter. Sometimes one of these types would wait for East German Trabant police car to pull up and then say :”Go!"

From this description it doesn't look as if the Russian guards were that unhappy. One thing a Porsche can't outrun is a bullet - not even one from the Vopos, let alone the Russian troops.....
