RF:

No. This guy, as almost all "peace promoters", is just an oportunist. His speech on behalf peace and human rights has only one puropose: fame and glory... "his" fame and glory. His greatest achievement was the Central American Peace Plan and his defiance to Ronald Reagan´s policies. When the civil wars died down in CA he himself and his propaganda aparatus stated clearly that it was because of "his" plan that general war was avoided and peace and democracy re established in these lands (in Costa Rica we have been a Republic since 1821 and a democracy since the turn of the XX Century so that do not apply).

The thruth is another thing. The Sandinistas were never keen to accept any plan except theirs whilst they received economic and military help from the USSR and Cuba. Also Nicaragua was the safe haven for the leftist guerrillas operating in El Salvador and Guatemala. It was only Reagan´s support for the Contras and the Honduran goverment that impede a "domino effect" in the region. In Costa Rica the enemy was operating almost freely crossing the border and killing policemen (as a matter of fact Daniel Ortega, actual president of Nicaragua, was arrested in Costa Rica in the 70ies for a bank assault and the killing of a policeman, but our own Jimmy Carter, Rodrigo Carazo then President of CR, gave him amnesty). In those years the USN deployed a Battlegroup centered in a CVN with a lot of escort vessels and subs putting Fidel Castro a little bit worried and the Contra helped to limit the agressive capacity of the Sandinistas. In 1986 the USN sent the USS Iowa (with her narrow beam) to Central America where I saw her fire her main 16" guns in a show of might: great show that made me wonder of how Bismarck or Yamato would have done the same thing! Something to be seen, I must admit.

By the end of the 80ies the Sandinistas saw their help at first shrinking and then colapsing when the perestroika movement overtook Russia and Cuba, as was obvious with the lack of economic resources and the will, stopped all aid. That and the threat of an even easier military action from the US to destroy their regime (already US troops were by then in Honduras) led the Sandinistas, leaded by Ortega, to come to Arias. In exchange of fame Arias will help the Sandinistas to leave the political power in Nicaragua in an election and democratic transition, their lifes and stolen assets safe in a general amnesty. Of course that happened.

Arias is the small bully that can act whilst he is in the shadow of a mighty hero. As the actual crisis in Honduras showed, being he now, we suppose, a mature and better international negotiator, he was unable to bring to the table the conflicting parts, even with the support of all the international opinion and the naive position of Obama and Hillary Clinton: he failed miserably.

He is just a talking head, no better than Carter or Obama: a colaborasionist for the enemies of democracy and western civilization.

Leave it for a while, until the northern winter is over. The summer weather isn't so bad for a country bordering the Arctic Circle.

It was yesterday reported that Iceland is to apply for membership of the European Union. No doubt somebody over there has their eye on the available EU subsidies arising from a membership deal.

However their fishing industry was not too happy as it would place their livlihood under threat, and it would appear that the majority of their voters are not too happy - so far.
