Shock and Vibration Testing of Ships

Post by Ulrich Rudofsky »

The shock and vibration testing of ships is an interesting subject. After the shock test of the DDG 53 JOHN PAUL JONES, the new Arleigh Burke class DDGs were substantially stiffened and then the DDG 81 WINSTON CHURCHILL was exposed to a violent three-phase shock test. Presently, computer-modeling in virtual reality is being tested to make the test cheaper and less risky. An example of this type of work is being done at the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterrey, California.
