Question about armor effective thickness
Question about armor effective thickness
Hello fellow forum members. Once my friend told me, that after certain thickness armor plate becomes "less effective". If that is true, what is the maximum effective thickness (anything thicker and diminishing returns will kick in) of Homogeneous and Face Hardened armor plates?

Re: Question about armor effective thickness
Do you mean the "semi infinite penetration?
If so the "semi infinite" depth of penetration is said to be more than 1.5 times the length of the projectile.

Re: Question about armor effective thickness
The Germans determined that the point of diminishing returns in terms of face hardened armour was about 13". It was also found that homogeneous armour should not exceed much more than about 6" thickness.
Entering a night sea battle is an awesome business. The enveloping darkness, hiding the enemy's.. seems a living thing, malignant and oppressive.Swishing water at the bow and stern mark an inexorable advance toward an unknown destiny.

Thank you Dave. So it seems that both the Yamato's 25,6"/650mm Vickers Hardened (face hardened) and Iowa's 17"/432mm Class B (homogeneous) turret faces were way beyond effective thickness.Dave Saxton wrote: ↑Tue Jun 26, 2018 3:22 pm The Germans determined that the point of diminishing returns in terms of face hardened armour was about 13".
