Also it should be noted that the RAF were bombing more accurately by night (with radar navigation) than the USAF by day by mid 1944, about the same time P-51Ds with drop tanks were able to escort the B-17s. So saying night bombing wasn't a threat to German production is wrong. Nowadays 'terror' bombing as its called during WW2 is considered by most to be almost a warcrime but the fact is it really did screw up German production, 'de-housing' population, fire storms like Hamburg. Even Goebals admitted 1 or 2 more of those happening shortly after would have really crushed German morale and possibly ended the war there. Harris has been villefied for his tactics but they did eventually work, LeMay obviously thought so because when he took over in the far east against Japan he immediately sent the B-29s on incendiary bombing strikes against Japanese cities (fire bombing Tokyo, a mostly wooden city, killed more than either nuke did).

It was these two inovations (radar navigation and fighter drop tanks) that made strategic bombing successful.

As evidenced by Albert Speer in the TV series ''The World at War'' the bombing campaign was described by him as the ''Second Front.''

There can be no doubt it shortened the war and saved far more Allied lives than the losses in bomber crews.
