With CV-66 now 3.2 miles down, intact, upright, 400 miles west of Bermuda, her namesake has entered service.
Is Bermuda that far from the States. Just checked. So it is. Further in fact.

USS America, LHA-6, is lead ship of a new amphibious assault ship class, a number of which are planned.
Sister LHA-7 will be USS Tripoli, her predecessor LPH-10 still survives from the Iwo Jima class,
used for ballistic missile tests as Ex Tripoli, MLP-1.
A full broadside. The traditional English salute.
Thanks. Sean.

I was on LHA-5, USS Peleliu. It will be interesting to see what changes/corrections they made to that design for America.
