Naming Ceremony for HMS Artful

Post by RF »

Last Friday the third submarine of the Royal Navy's Astute Class of attack submarines underwent its naming ceremony, being named HMS Artful, held at Devonshire Dock Hall at contractor BAE Systems.
HMS Artful is 7,400 tonnes, 318 feet long and is third in a line of subs preceeded by HMS Astute and HMS Ambush. The next two subs, HMS Audacious and HMS Anson, are under construction at Barrow-in-Furness in Cumbria. The keel for the sixth sub in this class was laid down in July 2013, which is planmed to be named HMS Agamemnonm while plans for a seventh sub, HMS Ajax are stated to be ''in the pipeline'.'

HMS Artful is not perhaps the name I would use for a warship, but it is pleasing that some famous names such as Audacious, Anson, Howe and Ajax are continuing.
