Barbary Pirate raids on England and Ireland

Post by RF »

I am currently doing some research into the activities of the Turkish and North African Barbary Pirate slave trader raids on the coasts of England and Ireland in the early seventeenth century. There is very little published in Britain on this subject, even locally in the two counties most affected in England, Devon and Cornwall, as it seems to be a taboo subject.

I would be grateful for any references forum members could give to me, beyond the usual sources of Wikipaedia etc.

This might be a good starter--there is also a reference to a book on the subject:

Their shoulders held the sky suspended;
They stood and Earth's foundations stay;
What God abandoned these defended;
And saved the sum of things for pay.

The Barbary coast inhabitants over the centuries have caused many ructions to Europeans. And the USA.
Thanks Tommy303, your links still function, most enlightening.
Apparently, the US Department of the Navy, founded 30 April 1798, was a direct result of political issues in that part of N Africa.
The 1st Barbary War, 1801-1805 included the Battle of Derna, Tripoli, from which the 3 US Warships, CVE-64, LPH-10 and the next LHA-7 are named.
The schooner Enterprise was amongst those US vessels operating in the Med during this period, capturing the Barbary vessel Tripoli.
A rather famous US warship name that needs no introduction, possibly the US navy's premier name.
A full broadside. The traditional English salute.
Thanks. Sean.

Although now perhaps as a fictional starship rather than a maritime man o war.
