From now on instead of starting a new thread for every single battle anniversary in the calendar, just post them all here.

June 14:

Well, RF got two very important dates:

OK: Germans enter Paris in one great victory.
OK: Falklands war ends in another great victory, this time for the British

But we have some other special dates, specially for the English nation:

1645 - English Civil War: Battle of Naseby – 12,000 Royalist forces are beaten by 15,000 Parliamentarian soldiers.

Great battle indeed, it´s considered as one of the most important battles in History. I believe that after that battle the King began his countdown to for the loss of his head and Mr. Cromwell got his big time as Leader...

Well, another superb date:

1775 - American Revolutionary War: The United States Army is established by the Continental Congress.

I doubt this date is of special rejoice for the commie and islamic vermin. I hope that the countries freed by the US Army might remember this date.

Hey: a naval one!!!

1789 - Mutiny on the Bounty: HMAV Bounty mutiny survivors including Captain William Bligh and 18 others reach Timor after a nearly 7,400 km (4,000-mile) journey in an open boat.

Another important one but this time a corsican one:

1800 - Napoleon Bonaparte's Army defeats the Austrians at the Battle of Marengo in Northern Italy and re-conquers Italy.

And this one is a lovingly one for the Mexican pride:

1846 - Bear Flag Revolt begins - Anglo settlers in Sonoma, California, start a rebellion against Mexico and proclaim the California Republic.

The date in which California rejected a future as a desertic province of an undeveloped country and became a superpower inside another superpower. I wonder which would have been the poverty index of California not being for this Revolt.

And, another battle, friends:

1863 - American Civil War: Battle of Second Winchester – A Union garrison is defeated by the Army of Northern Virginia in the Shenandoah Valley town of Winchester, Virginia.

I still believe that the South was a much better army than the North.

This is going to be a lovingly date for us, Battleship buffs:

1900 - The Reichstag approves a second law that allows the expansion of the German navy.

and...

1908 - Fourth German Navy Bill is passed authorising the financing the building of another four major warships.

the Germans were quite busy building cute warships on June 14th. Maybe Kaiser Willy intended to play with them sometime...

Countdown to Jutland!

Well, this is not military but very important for our belicose culture:

1938 - Action Comics issues the first Superman comic.

And Franco wanted to play war himself:

1940 - Spanish invade Tangier international zone.

This date is special for all those who say that the allies were the most goodwilled folks on Earth:

1941 - Soviet mass deportations and murder of Estonians, Lithuanians and Latvians begun.

This speaks lovingly about the great "allies" that fought the Nazi war criminals. I was reading and found no record of a Nuremberg Trial against this or any other allied war crime. Quite moral, isn´t it?

Another one for naval buffs. I believe Bgile is gonna love this one:

1952 - The keel is laid for the nuclear submarine USS Nautilus.

This one is George Bush astounding victory in his war against terrorism:

2002 - Twelve are killed and 50 injured by a car bomb explosion in front of the U.S. consulate in Karachi, Pakistan.

Wow! At this pace he could win the war in, say... 5,000 years?

Well, a very busy June 14th...

I did think of Naseby and it is often quoted as the decisive turning point of the first Civil War of the 1640's.
However some experts argue that Marston Moor, which preceeded this battle, decided the outcome of this war and that Naseby which followed merely confirmed it. I am inclined to agree with this view, particulary given the strategic consequences of the Marston Moor defeat - loss of the whole of northern England. Naseby added the loss of the English Midlands as well.

The King never of course expected to lose his head and at the time after Naseby all the Parliamentarians, Cromwell included, wanted a peaceful settlement with the King, whereby he continued on the throne.
What changed that was the King's refusal to negotiate seriously with Parliament after his capture at the end of the first Civil War. Instead he played them for time and then used Irish Catholic mercenaries to start a second Civil War. This failed and it was as a consequence of this second war that the King was put on trial for treason. The King refused to accept any legitimacy for the court or for the Parliament that set the court up, so he offered no defence to the charges brought. It was only as a response to this final intransigence that Cromwell pressed for execution and the court could not deliver anything other than a guilty verdict.
