This is quite beatifull:

1462 - Vlad III Dracula attempts to assassinate Mehmed II in The Night Attack, and the latter is forced to retreat from Wallachia.

Even vampires dislike islamic infiltrations...

1497 - Battle of Deptford Bridge - Forces under King Henry VII soundly defeat troops led by Michael An Gof.
1775 - American Revolutionary War: Battle of Bunker Hill - The battle actually takes place on Breed's Hill by mistake. British forces take Breed's Hill outside of Boston with heavy casualties.
1863 - Battle of Aldie in the Gettysburg Campaign of the American Civil War.
1876 - Indian Wars: Battle of the Rosebud - 1,500 Sioux and Cheyenne led by Crazy Horse beat back General George Crook forces at Rosebud Creek in Montana Territory.
1877 - Indian Wars: Battle of White Bird Canyon - The Nez Perce defeat the US Cavalry at White Bird Canyon in the Idaho Territory.
1932 - Bonus Army: Around a thousand World War I veterans amass at the United States Capitol as the U.S. Senate considers a bill that would give them certain benefits.
1940 - World War II: Operation Ariel begins - Allied troops start to evacuate France, following Germany's takeover of Paris and most of the nation.
1940 - World War II: Sinking of the RMS Lancastria by the Luftwaffe near Saint-Nazaire, France.
1940 - The three Baltic states of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania fall under the occupation of the Soviet Union.

June 18:

1429 - French forces under the leadership of Joan of Arc crush the main English army under Sir John Fastolf at the Battle of Patay. This turns the tide of the Hundred Years' War.
1778 - American Revolutionary War: British troops abandon Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
1812 - War of 1812: The U.S. Congress declares war on the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland.

1815 - Napoleonic Wars: Battle of Waterloo leads to Napoleon Bonaparte abdicating the throne of France for a second and final time.

Napoleon quote: "Today´s battle would be like a pic-nic"

1940 - Appeal of June 18 by Charles de Gaulle.

1940 - "Finest Hour" speech by Winston Churchill.
1965 - Vietnam War: The United States uses B-52 bombers to attack National Liberation Front guerrilla fighters in South Vietnam.
1979 - SALT II is signed by the United States and the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics.

Well, well: today is the Waterloo Anniversary, which is when Wellington and a numerical inferior force stood a whole day against the "invincible" Imperial Guard and the Imperial Cavalry and the squares hold until Blucher arrived. Why Blucher arrived? Because Grouchy did not found the prussians, nor the battlefield as a matter of fact, so Napoleon didn´t achieved a new numerical superiority in the afternoon.
Of course, french historians blamed the incredible defeat to the fact that the "Emperor" was suffering from hemorroids that morning. I wonder, if he didn´t feel fit why he attacked at all? It was his call anyway...

No, he had no choice. He knew it was only a matter of time before the Prussians arrived and he would be heavily outnumbered.

Bgile:

The British and the Germans didn´t outnumber Napoleon Army. Together they, in fact, outnumber the army displayed in the field on Waterloo at the evening, but the corsican dictator had a complete Corps marching to Ligny and Grouchy´s force. Together the three parts outnumbered Wellington, even with the 17,000 soldiers he had covering his "retreat" as far as Brusels.

Whatever, on the field, June 18th, Napoleon outnumbered Wellington alone and after a couple of stupid moves from the Prince of Orange the corsican dictatorwas a great advantage over Wellington. But he lost because, according to a lot of misguided people, he had very bad hemorroids that day...

I don't accept that either Karl, as you probably know. But there was definitely something wrong that day. Well actually it probably goes back before the day of the battle, when he assigned his generals. Some of his decisions look very odd. I wonder if anyone has actually bothered to research this issue, all the books I have read have dealt with the battle itself, not the way Napoleon lost. Anyone know of a suitable book?

Hi Ian,

without doubt Napoleon acted very strange that day and the days before, as a matter of fact. Maybe his early success in bringing down the clown king and the reaction in France make him believe he was godlike or something alike.
I haven´t found something that explains his actions neither.

Kind regards...

I will be out for next days so I advance the following:

June 19:
1179 - The Norwegian Battle of Kalvskinnet outside Nidaros. Earl Erling Skakke is killed, and the battle changes the tide of the civil wars.
1306 - The Earl of Pembroke's army defeats Bruce's Scottish army at the Battle of Methven.
1807 - Admiral Dmitry Senyavin destroys the Ottoman fleet in the Battle of Athos.
1816 - Battle of Seven Oaks between Northwest Company and Hudson Bay Company, near Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada.
1821 - Decisive defeat of the Philikí Etaireía by the Ottomans at Wallachia.
1867 - Maximilian I of the Mexican Empire is executed by a firing squad in Querétaro, Querétaro.
1870 - After all of the Southern States are formally readmitted to the United States of America, the Confederate States of America ceases to exist.

A naval one:

1944 - The Battle of the Philippine Sea takes place.

June 20:

1631 - The sack of Baltimore: the Irish village of Baltimore is attacked by Algerian pirates.
1685 - Monmouth Rebellion: The Duke of Monmouth declares himself King of England at Bridgwater.
1756 - British garrison imprisoned in the Black Hole of Calcutta.

A nautical one:

1819 - The U.S. vessel SS Savannah arrives at Liverpool, United Kingdom. She is the first steam-propelled vessel to cross the Atlantic, but most of the journey was made under sail.

June 21:

524 - Godomar, King of the Burgundians defeats the Franks at the Battle of Vezerone.
1621 - an execution of 27 Czech lords on the Old Town Square in Prague as a consequence of the battle on the "White Mountain".
1665 - First soldiers of Le Régiment de Carignan-Salières arrive at Quebec to invade Iroquois territories.
1798 - Irish Rebellion of 1798: The British Army defeats Irish rebels at Battle of Vinegar Hill
1813 - Peninsular War: Battle of Vitoria
1813 - Laura Secord sets out to warn British forces of an impending U.S. attack on Queenston, Ontario during the War of 1812.
1824 - Greek War of Independence: Egyptian forces capture Psara in the Aegean Sea.
1826 - Maniots defeat Egyptians under Ibrahim Pasha in the Battle of Vergas
1854 - First Victoria Cross won during bombardment of Bomarsund in the Aland Islands.
1864 - New Zealand Land Wars: The Tauranga Campaign ends.

One that is of uttermost interest for Batteship fans:

1919 - Admiral Ludwig von Reuter scuttles the German fleet in Scapa Flow, Orkney. The nine sailors killed were the last casualties of the First World War.

This is another great one for the land warfare fans:

1940 - World War II: France surrenders to Germany.

The French surrendered in the same train wagon were they humilliated the Germans in 1918. After that the Sixth Army marched around the Napoleon´s Triumphal Arc in Paris: an awesome victory!. Incredible: that same Army was surrounded and defeated by the fanatical resistance of the soviets at Stalingrad not three years later (Von Paulus surrendered in Febuary 2, 1943).

1942 - World War II: Tobruk falls to Italian and German forces.
1942 - World War II: A Japanese submarine surfaces near the Columbia River in Oregon, firing 17 shells at nearby Fort Stevens in one of only a handful of attacks by the Japanese against the U.S. mainland.
1945 - World War II: Battle of Okinawa ends.
1977 - Menachem Begin became Israel's sixth prime minister.

For those that doesn´t know Menachem Begin was a terrorist who was involved in the blowing of the King David Hotel. Many British Officers were killed at that terrorist attack. Later he was PM of Israel and was famous because he signed with Sadat a peace accord at Camp David.

I believe to be again by June 22th...

Karl,

James Scott, Duke of Monmouth and Buccleuth, was ''crowned'' King of England in the castle hall at Taunton (the same place that Judge Jeffreys' later held his ''bloody assize'') and not at Bridgwater.

The French surrender in 1940, including the formal surrender of the 400,000 troops in the Maginot Line was on June 22nd, one year exactly to the day that Barbarossa was launched. The Frech surrender to the Italians was on June 24th.

One further date to add, on this the day of the summer solstice (winter solstice for Marcelo and all southern hemisphere forum members):

June 21st 1941: the Hungarians are told of Operation Barbarossa, to be launched the following day, and take the decision to irrevocably enter the Second World War.

While the Hungarians had already participated in the Axis invasion of Yugoslavia they had remained nominally neutral. The British finally declared war on Hungary on 5th December 1941 after Horthy ignored a British ultimatum to withdraw from collaberation with the Germans. The Hungarians then declared war on the USA on 12th December 1941. As a consequence Budapest was later subject to bombing raids by both the RAF and USAF.

June 22:

Another busy day for warriors around the world:

1812 - Napoleonic Wars- Napoleon invades Russia.

On his way to defeat.

A naval one!

1898 - Spanish-American War: United States Marines land in Cuba.

When the US fought wars in order to WIN them, not "pacify" and "bring democracy" to other coountries...

That´s what is remembered today: the signing the Compiégne armistice.

1941 - Nazi Germany invades the Soviet Union in Operation Barbarossa, one of the most dramatic turning points of World War II.

The greatest battle in history was begining: millions of men and thousand of kilometers, scorched earth and the greatest masterminds in tactics and strategies ever... The turning point in history. A lot of "what if". At the end the communist vermin won with some 20 million casualties...

1941 - First anti-fascist armed unit in occupied Europe founded by Croatian partisans near Sisak, Croatia.

Hey! I always believed the first ones were the so called "maquis" which a had so much propaganda.

1941 - The Lithuanian 1941 independence begins

1941 - Various Communist and Socialist French Resistance movements merge to one group.

More commie vermin...

1944 - Opening day of the Soviet Union's Operation Bagration against Army Group Centre

Operation Bagration was the soviet greatest offensive in the whole war. Nothing stands alike in size, not even Overlord or Market Garden....

A very busy day. :!:

Another one...

How many times the French surrender to the Germans: a whole week? I begin to understand Keitel´s astonishment when he was surrendering Germany and saw a French representative...

1944 - The Battle of Tali-Ihantala, the largest battle ever fought in the Nordic Countries begins.
1948 - The Berlin Airlift begins.

A sad one: the beggining of the first war that the US failed to won... and which ended the career of the most brilliant officer ever born in the United States: Douglass McArthur...

1950 - The beginning of the Korean War, with the invasion of the South by the North.

This is a really great one:

It ever sound to me that he really meant: "Ich bin ein idiot"...

1993 - The U.S. launches a missile attack targeting Baghdad intelligence headquarters in retaliation for a thwarted assassination attempt against former President George H.W. Bush in April in Kuwait.

Wow, what an strategic accomplishment! Why they didn´t beat the Irakis in 1991 with the approval of the whole world (even the arabs) beats the wisdom out of me?

Kind regards...

June 28:

1098 - Fighters of the First Crusade defeat Kerbogha of Mosul.
1389 - Ottoman and Serbian armies fight the bloody Battle of Kosovo, opening the way for the Ottoman conquest of Southeastern Europe (see Vidovdan).

As you can see the war against terrorism was not Bush´s invention (anyway he lacked the imagination) but is being fought since a thousand + years...

1651 - Battle of Beresteczko between Poles and Ukrainians, the biggest battle in the 17th century, starts.
1776 - Thomas Hickey, Continental Army private and Life Guard to General George Washington, was hanged for mutiny and sedition.
1778 - American Revolutionary War: Battle of Monmouth fought between the American Continental Army under George Washington and the British Army led by Sir Henry Clinton.
1865 - The Army of the Potomac is disbanded

The Potomac Army was the last US Army that sufered from REAL serious casualties.

1914 - Franz Ferdinand, Archduke of Austria and his wife Sophie are assassinated in Sarajevo by young Serbian nationalist Gavrilo Princip , the casus belli of World War I.

Well, well, well a very important date indeed. WWI and our contempary world was shaped by this single stupid incident. And the sad part is the following:

1919 - The Treaty of Versailles is signed in Paris, formally ending World War I between Britain, France, Italy, the United States and allies on the one side and Germany and Austria Hungary on the other side.

The allied wisdom produced one the greatest tragedies in History

1922 - The Irish Civil War begins with the shelling of the Four Courts in Dublin by Free State forces.
1936 - The Japanese puppet state of Mengjiang is formed in northern China.
1950 - Seoul is captured by troops from North Korea.

1967 - Israel annexes East Jerusalem.
1976 - The Angolan court sentenced US and UK mercenaries to death sentences and prison terms in the Luanda Trial.

Why no one put to trial terrorists and commie vermin and sentence them to death?

2004 - The 17th NATO Summit starts in Istanbul.

Ahh, the mighty NATO alliance: US and England led coalition of many countries that won´t fight even to defend themselves. Let´s see: Kosovo or Irak...

2004 - Sovereign power is handed to the interim government of Iraq by the Coalition Provisional Authority, ending the U.S.-led rule of that nation.

Ahh, Bush´s promise of democracy to Irak is real: now they live in peace and fraternal coexistence.

2005 - A final design for Manhattan's Freedom Tower is formally unveiled.

I´m still waiting for the US retaliation against the muslim fanatics for the destruction of the WTC towers. Let´s say, something like winning WW2 after the Pearl Harbor attacks...
