A very important day.
Gettysburg!
At July 2, 1863 the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia of 70,000 men, Robert E. Lee commanding attacked the flanks of the Army of the Potomac, 80,000 men, George Meade commanding ourside of Gettysburg.
The day before the confederates pushed the dutchmen of Howard´s Ist Corps out of the town and Hancock entrenched them at the hill´s surrounding it.
Today was the day in which the XX Maine regiment of volunteers under a profesor, Colonel Joshua Chamberlain did support continued attacks of Longstreet´s men at Little Round Top and, when they ran out of ammo then Chamberlain ordered a bayonet charge that destroyed his attackers.
For his day in Little Round Top Chamberlain got the Congressional Medal of Honor. Later he was made Brigadier General and wounded 6 times. When the Confederacy surrendered at Appotamox Chamberlain was a Major General and appointed by Grant to receive the surrender of the South.
But today is the anniversary of Little Round Top where 350 volunteers from Maine saved the day for the North (and they save it because if Chamberlain would have collapse then all the northern flank would have cave in and the South, likely would have won the battle, the war and their place in History).

Two very important military actions on this date:

About the Naval Battle(from Wikipedia):
The Battle of Santiago de Cuba on July 3,1898, was the largest naval engagement of the Spanish-American War and resulted in the destruction of the Spanish Caribbean Squadron (also known as the Flota de Ultramar). In May 1898, Spanish Admiral Pascual Cervera y Topete, was first spotted in Santiago Harbor where his fleet had taken shelter for protection from sea attack. For two months there was a stand-off between the Spanish naval forces and American. When the Spanish squadron attempted to leave the harbor on July 3, the American forces destroyed or grounded five of the six ships. Only one vessel, the speedy new armored cruiser Cristobal Colón, still survived.
During the stand-off, United States Assistant Naval Constructor Richmond Pearson Hobson had been ordered by Rear Admiral William T. Sampson to sink the Civil War collier Merrimac in the harbor to bottle up the Spanish fleet. The mission was a failure, and Hobson and his crew were captured. They were exchanged on July 6, and Hobson became a national hero; he received the Medal of Honor in 1933 and became a Congressman.

After July 2 attempts to destroy the flanks of the Union Army Robert E. Lee is convinced that those flanks have been reinforced and that the center of the Union position is weak. His second in command, James "Old Pete" Longstreet is not so convinced about that, he knew that the Union center is under the command of his old friend Winfield Scott Hancock and a lot of Irish forces that would not run as Howard´s dutchmen did on July 1st.
Lee appointed Longstreet to lead the attack, even after the protests of the latter. Longstreet would attack in a line of about a mile with 15,000 troops from three divisions: Trimble, Pettygrew and Pickett (the attack is known as the Pickett Charge because "Old George Pickett" has very good PR while his comrades don´t). Before the attack begins all the Southern artillery would fire the greatest barrage of the war in order to destroy the Union positions. But Hancock knews what Lee is attempting and he withdraws his people and guns from the fire zone only to re occupy them when the barrage is over and the enemy formed "parade-like" to charge against him.
The Charge of the Light Brigade had 30 per cent casualties; Pickett´s Charge ammounted 50 per cent casualties and the position was not taken. After it the South never had again the capability for offensive operations and went to the defense for the next two years only to finish as all the defensive campaigns: defeat.
At Gettysburg the combined casualties are of 53,000 dead, wounded and missing. 53,000 casualties in just three days (about 736 casualties per hour)! After reading about it one cannot understand why CNN is crying loud for 3,000 US casualties in Irak in 4 years (0,0856 casualties per hour. You need 12 hours for a complete casualty).
Well, warriors then and "profesional soldiers" today. That´s how a guy with horses and arrows could conquer the world some thousand years ago and nowaday you had nuclear devices and supersonic planes but you can´t control a bunch of camel drivers...

Happy birthday Uncle Sam, God bless you and let you defend our western civilization against nazis, commies and fanatical muslim vermin! I don´t believe Belgium, France or Paraguay could (or want) fought for the rest of us... as a matter of fact I don´t believe they could fight for themselves neither...
And, even with a stupid President as Bush, everybody want´s to go in, live and work in the US, not to run from there so it still is the most succesfull society in the world. Just keep an eye on China and prepare for a war overseas in the next twenty five years, one or two more marine divisions must be considered...

1803 - The convention of Artlenburg leads to the French occupation of Hanover (which had been ruled by the British king).
1809 - Battle of Wagram starts, the two-day battle was the largest yet of the Napoleonic Wars. .
1813 - War of 1812: Three weeks of British raids on Fort Schlosser, Black Rock and Plattsburgh, New York begin.
1814 - War of 1812: Battle of Chippewa - American Major General Jacob Brown defeats British General Phineas Riall at Chippewa, Ontario.
1830 - France invades Algeria.

Battle of Sedgemoor
The last full scale battle to take place in England, between the forces of James Scott, Duke of Monmouth and Buccleouth and illegitimate son of England's Charles II, and the forces of James II, led by Louis Dumas, Earl of Feversham (yes, a Frenchman with an English title!) with one of Winston Churchill's ancestors as second in command.
In itself not a major battle, between six and seven thousand troops commited in total. The actual site of the battle, which took place at night in dense fog, is not clear, as it is located in flat ''fen'' drained country to the immediate east of Bridgewater, Somerset, between Chedzoy and Westonzoyland, and now traversed by the M5 motorway.
Casualties were not of major proportion: the rebel army defeated with 300 dead and over 1,000 taken prisoner by ''Kirke's Lambs'' aka the Tangier Regiment, whilst the Kings Army lost 16 dead and about 80 wounded.

Somewhere behind soviet lines the order is given for the 5th Guard Tank Army to began it´s march to the front. That Army is the spearhead of soviet forces that will colide with Hauser at Prochorovka and produce the greatest tank battle in History and the greatest battle of WWII.

Today the fierce battle raged when the greatest armoured formations clashed at the outskirst of Prokhorovka. One Waffen SS Panzer division alone against a complete Tank Army while other two Pz divisions clashed at the flanks with numerical superior enemies.

The lead division of the Panzerkorps involved in the battle during the day was the Totenkopf, with 101 operational tanks, including 10 Tigers and 7 command tanks, along with 21 Sturmgeschütze and 11 Marders, and had its tanks moved north across the Psel river, and was involved in fighting 5th Guards 6,th Guards, and 1st Tank Armies.
The other two divisions were Leibstandarte Adolf Hitler, with 67 operational tanks on the evening of 11 July, including 4 Tiger Tanks, 7 command tanks, and 4 obsolete Panzer IIs. Additionally 10 Sturmgeschütz assault guns and 20 lightly armoured Marder tank hunters, and Das Reich, with 68 operational tanks including command tanks, 1 Tiger, and 8 captured T-34s. Additionally 27 Sturmgeschütze and 12 Marders were present.
Meanwhile the soviets on the field had the 5th Guards Tank Army. The total tank strength of the army stood at 850 tanks. Many of these however, were obsolete T-70a and lend-lease tanks. The breakdown was 501 T-34a, 261 T-70s, 35 Churchills, 40 self-propelled guns of the SU-122 and SU-76 type, and a small but unknown number of heavy KV-1 tanks.
The army fielded the 2nd Guards, 18th, and 29th Tank Corps in the first echelon. 5th Mechanised Corps and the already weakened 2nd Tank Corps were kept in reserve. 18th Tank Corps fielded 144 tanks on the afternoon of 11 July, while 29th Tank Corps fielded 212 tanks and self-propelled guns. Together with the formations committed during the day, the total number of Soviet tanks in the battle probably reached 500.
The Soviet 1st Tank Army also attacked elements of the German XLVIIIth Panzerkorps, but this was not directly related to the tank battle of Prokhorovka.
