Battle of Little Big Horn
Re: Battle of Little Big Horn
In all probability, Custer would have formed the four companies of the 2nd US Cav as a battalion and most likely used them as the diversion historically given to Reno. This was one more company than Reno had in the actual event, and Custer could have attacked as planned with the entire weight of the 7th, less Benteen if he was still sent off up the valley. At any rate he would have had eight instead of five companies when he reached the north end of the village and this would have been enough to attack immediately instead of the fatal wait for Benteen to show up. In that case, he might well have won.
Their shoulders held the sky suspended;
They stood and Earth's foundations stay;
What God abandoned these defended;
And saved the sum of things for pay.

Re: Battle of Little Big Horn
On this rainy Sunday I did read this series of articles about Custers last stand.
I bought in 1985 a very fine thick cardboard also huge game from Italy: Little Big Horn with 3 levels of terrain all expressed in cardboard.

There were 3 scenario's: the historical raid with Custers 7th with Reno as an advance scout guard, which he was surely to lose......and be butchered.
A second scenario with a full second cavalry regiment (2nd)...... which was a balanced game against the masses of indians.
A third game was composed of a large military expedition including 3 cavalry regiments (2nd, 7th and 10th) , 2 infantry regiments and the 2 Gatling guns.
In this scenario the Indians would be the ones which had to fight hard and clever to be able to escape.....
A very realistic game with Indian chiefs with rallying capabilities, US cavalry with mounted and dismounted sides on the counters.
Fragmental losses, a very realistic CRT...One of the few better advanced games of International Team, which had a couple of
very good and playable basic games: Zargo's Lords and Okinawa 1945, but, except for Mockba and Blue Stones, failed in developing good intermediate games
The best and both also highly professional two games of them were Supermarina (on a huge German U-boat Grid map and landsknecht).

Looking at it you could have any variety of scenario's for Little Big Horn, depending on how the Indian chiefs react to the strategies Custer employs.....

Again interesting to look at - but there is one error, namely that Syria was French territory and was under Vichy and not British control until June 1941.VeenenbergR wrote:

The main consideration here is this: does the Italian fleet remain on its completely defensive posture as it did in reality - or will it do what it should have done, that is attack the British all out right from the start, beginning with support for an invasion of Malta and then supporting the French at Oran and Mers el Kabir?

Last June 25-26 we forgot this epic episode. Still debatable and full of interesting turns.
