Hello, I'm new here, do not know if this is the right place to ask but I found out that your talking about the ships hanging at my wall. So any excuse if I am posting incorrect.

For years I have 2 prints/paintings formerly owned by my grandparents. I think that the flag is of Bismarck's Navy. Sometimes I also think to recognize some of the ships from the Internet, but actually I still have no idea where I am looking at.

Is there anyone here who after seeing the images below recognized something?

Regards,

Bonno

... Hi Bonno,

Although the artistic license taken by the artist makes it difficult to identify the ships or their exact construction classes, the warships portrayed are certainly pre-dreadnought batleships and torpedo boats of the Imperial German Navy dating from around the turn of the 20th century.

Was there that much German contruction in the 1890's though for their to be a large fleet of pre-Dreadnoughts?

These pictures look like propaganda posters or even recruitment posters of the type the KM was later to use with the panzerschiffe in line.....

I'm also puzzled by the proximity of lighthouse to the ships in the first poster - is this a harbour entrance or ''artistic licence?''

The pictures are stylized, but it seems to be representations of real ships.

The first picture has on the right side what seems to be protected cruisers of the Victoria Louise class (1898-1900) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Victoria_L ... ed_cruiser. This class originally had three stacks, and were modernised in 1905-1911 and reduced to two. On the left side appears to be battleships of the Kaiser Friedrich III class (1898-1901) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kaiser_Fri ... battleship, although it could be of the Wittelsbach or even Braunschweig o Deutschland classes.

On the second picture, they appear to be battleships of the Deutschland class (1906-1908) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deutschlan ... battleship. They has three stacks and the 88s of the bow are in sponsons on the hull instead of cuts in the bow like the Braunschweig class.
