Did you know that in 1902 the Kaiser put a tax on sparkling wine (Schaumweinsteuer) in order to finance the warship building program and the construction of the Kiel Canal (Kaiser Wilhelm Kanal or Nordsee-Ostsee Kanal)? This tax is still in effect in Germany today, with some minor interruptions, and it now includes also fortified wines like Port.

A 70s term I believe Ulrich. It is short for Quasi Autonomous Non Governmental Organisation ie an organisation supposedly independent of government set up to carry out some aspect of government. At least that was always my understanding of it. As RF says most people saw them as large drains on the public purse for little or no gain - they were, in my recollection, often stuffed with political favourites.

Sometime ago a chinese analyst said something very, but very true:

For your information, in germany the fuel taxes are around 80 cent and something cent, shared in three parts. Fuel tax, Öko tax and Umsatz-Tax.

The kaiser's sparkling wine tax is still intact, but the money is not used for the navy.

Germany is the country with the most worse tax system over the world.
And the Germans are still not able to defend themselves against such a dictation. They did not learned anything from their own history.

In Spiegel is commented that some European politicians are angry about the fact that the European comission is building up more buerocrats in each country of the EU.

Its funny to see that Bundeswehr is in action in Afghanistan to defend the heroin street against the taliban moslems in spite of the fact that they should do it in germany.

I read the koran and the bible in german. From the philosophical viewpoint
the difference between Islam and Christianity is not so big, better said, very similar. Both are in common that people, mainly the religious leaders
are not doing, what the books are telling them.

For people who are interested i can give via pn some information about books which show the philsophical forecasts of Mr. Hitler.
His analysis of the future is very similar to our reality now.
Another guy with well visions in this matter is Mr. Goerge Orwell :-)

No, shame about that, we'd have our new aircraft carriers in no time if it did!
Still, I suppose they could slap an extra tax on Plymouth Gin as it is now officially adopted by the RN!

Well, Germany has to bankroll the EU, along with the British, and as the EU accumulates the East European countries in membership it is getting very expensive!

What is needed Laurenz is a German version of our UK Independence Party and millions of people to vote for it.

Get rid of the quangos - all of them - then you can have the carriers, reduced tax on fuel and a better health service!

such a party might be not bad at all. :-)

But as i mentioned, the Germans learned nothing really.
The public system is very old. Nothing has
really changed.
In each western country the press release is more free than
in Germany. The French and the British news are really different
from ours.
Pressure from the authorities is more subtile than in former times,
but pressure exists.
In a comparison to Skandinavia nothing happens here, since more
than a half century :-)
In this case unfortunately we are not British enough.
