Isn't that the destroyer escort that sank all those Japanese submarines in the space of a few days? Went right down their picket line.RF wrote:You have now, though I must admit that i hadn't heard of this ship.lwd wrote:For the benefit of you Britt's has anyone mentioned the USS England?

That's the one.
Between 12 May and 27 May 1944 she sank 6 Japanese subs.

Its a pity that there isn't an England in the US Navy today..... despite the proclamations made after sinking those six Jap subs!

Welll there was a break between the two vessels of that name in the USN. I'd guess it's one of the names on the list for a future vessel.

Re: Greatest Warship Name Ever
USS England wasn't named for the that bit of Britain , but for a serviceman .
US Destroyers are all named after previous meritorius servicemen , just like the Arliegh Burke class of today is named after the famous WW2 destroyerman .
Occasionally , that habit can give rather pretty names to the ships : - consider the DDs " Vogelgesang " ( lit=birdsong ) , and " Forrest Royal " , " Chevalier " and " Ordronaux "
Mind you , some people do end up on things with names like " Hiram P Glimpbucket " , in which I would struggle to discern some poetic tinge .

Yes, unfortunately most of our ships have people or place names. There are a few unlike that ... Ranger and Enterprise, for example. And occasionally a "name" with a nice catch to it like "Bonhomme Richard" and "Shangri La".

Re: Greatest Warship Name Ever
With the current USS Enterprise scheduled to be decommissioned soon, I really wish that the Congress and Navy would name the first ship of the next carrier class ENTERPRISE, instead of Gerald Ford. I mean, come on! Ford? He was a mediocre Congresscritter and a useless President. Okay, so he was a good Damage Control Officer on a light carrier in WW2, but certainly not worthy of having a carrier named after him!
The next carriers need to be named Enterprise, Saratoga, Lexington, Hornet, Ranger...I would add Yorktown, Bunker Hill, Independence, Wasp, and Essex in here but they've already been taken for cruisers and amphibs.

You are correct 100% with that. I cannot envision a USN without an Enterprise: it´s like atavical or prophetic not to, like inviting disaster. With the current USS Enterprise scheduled to be decommissioned soon, I really wish that the Congress and Navy would name the first ship of the next carrier class ENTERPRISE, instead of Gerald Ford. Re: Greatest Warship Name Ever
Most of those " Good " names are those from the War of Independence , and that of 1812 , Thereafter they get a bit boring .
Britain had a long tradition of using the classical Greek and Roman mythological names , but the Leander class frigates appear to have been the last of those , and now the ships ( all seven of them ) are called things like HMS Cleethorpes .
Bloody dull .
And the two new Super-carriers haven't got proper " Carrier " names either , should be Eagle and Ark Royal of course ,
not Prince of Wales and Camilla Parker-Bowles-Recliner

We don't even name our submarines after fish anymore; it's all political.

Be thankful that you won't be getting the USS Richard Nixon or the USS Spiro Agnew....... and even Karl might have something to say about the USS Jimmy Carter....chcrawfish wrote: With the current USS Enterprise scheduled to be decommissioned soon, I really wish that the Congress and Navy would name the first ship of the next carrier class ENTERPRISE, instead of Gerald Ford.
